Among the many Star Wars projects that are currently in the works at Disney and Lucasfilm, the upcoming Obi-Wan Kenobi spin-off may be the most highly-anticipated title yet. Perhaps the biggest draw of the show is that Ewan McGregor will reprise his role as Obi-Wan, the exiled Jedi master who first appeared in The Phantom Menace back in 1999. Now, thanks to some behind-the-scenes photos that were just leaked on social media, fans can get a first look at McGregor on the set of the Disney Plus series.
Despite the improving conditions of the ongoing pandemic, McGregor was pictured wearing a grey face mask and a black trench coat that concealed his Obi-Wan Kenobi costume underneath. He also had a couple of personal items in his hand, including a cellphone and a book. The photos reveal the first time McGregor has stepped out onto the set since he was announced as part of the cast of Obi-Wan Kenobi.
Disney and Lucasfilm have been rather quiet on the details regarding the show's storyline, but we do know the project will be a prequel that features a 'rematch' between McGregor's Obi-Wan Kenobi and Hayden Christensen's Anakin Skywalker (a.k.a. Darth Vader). Joining them on-screen are a couple of familiar faces, including Bonnie Piesse, who played Beru in Revenge of the Sith, and Joel Edgerton, who played her husband Owen in the same film. Previously, there was speculation legendary Star Wars alumn Liam Neeson could also be tied to the project, but he recently shut down those rumors on Jimmy Kimmel Live. With that in mind, fans should not expect to see a Qui-Gon Jinn cameo appearance any time soon.
On the other hand, there are some newcomers to the franchise that fans can get excited about, including Eternals' Kumail Nanjiani, Game of Thrones' Indira Varma, Homeland's Rupert Friend, Straight Outta Compton's O'Shea Jackson, and The Queen's Gambit's Moses Ingram. According to reports, many of these actors are set to portray new characters to the Star Wars lore.
Ingram, in particular, is set to play an Inquisitor in Obi-Wan Kenobi, says Star Wars fanatic Corey Van Dyke. While such detail has not yet been officially confirmed, it would be an exciting development for the franchise should it ring true, as there has not been a single Inquisitor featured in any of the live-action films so far.
On the directorial side, Deborah Chow is set to helm the entire series, which is expected to consist of six hour-long episodes. Chow previously directed multiple episodes of The Mandalorian, proving she is more than capable of delivering quality Star Wars content.
Star Wars: Obi-Wan Kenobi is expected to be released on Disney Plus in 2022.
