Nvidia's real-time ray tracing technology called RTX has to be the most significant advancement for graphic cards in quite some time. Ever since the inception of 3D games, developers have used baked reflections, less accurate lighting, and faked shadows to make a scene gritty. The reason was the incapability of rendering the graphically intensive real-time effects, which are now possible, thanks to Nvidia. For years ray-tracing was mostly used in animated movies as they're pre-rendered. However, now it can be used in video games with the full effect of bringing a world to life.

But like everything, this feature has it's pros and cons. Ray-tracing will always be intensive on cards, so gamers need to know where it is worth the gamble. Not every game needs these effects if it doesn't enhance the overall experience. Although, quite a few games are coming this year that can gain immensely from using RTX. Let's check them out.

10 Biomutant

Biomutant

Biomutant is set to release in 2020 for all major platforms. This is an original action-RPG by Experiment 101 and THQ Nordic that looks pretty unique. Style-wise it looks like Ratchet and Clank meets Beyond Good And Evil 2. The main thing that sets this one apart is the environments, as it is noted to be an open-world, post-apocalyptic Kung-Fu fable RPG. The colorfulness of this game can immensely benefit from real-time reflections, global illumination, and realistic lighting. On top, it will enhance the exploration factor of this RPG, by making it look like an R-rated animated movie.

9 Watch Dogs: Legion

Watch Dogs: Legion is the latest entry in one of the top franchises by Ubisoft. The game is set in a futuristic London, with elements of fiction and reality mixed. Watch Dogs series is known for it's GTA styled open world and the ability to interact with the environment. The game takes this interaction one step further by giving players access to an in-game phone that can hack stuff. The dark nighttime of London and glowing futuristic visuals will highly benefit from the RTX features.

8 Assassin's Creed Valhalla

Assassin's Creed Valhalla is going to release for current and next-gen platforms in late 2020. This Ubisoft game is an action-RPG that takes place in England in the ninth century. As the game is said to be released on PS5 and Xbox Series X, there's a significant chance it will be graphically intensive. This should force a lot of gamers to upgrade their rigs. An inclusion of RTX here will not only boost sales but also give people a reason to experience the next-gen on PC. Essentially, making it a vital game of this year.

As the game is a role-playing title and probably involves a lot of exploration, the real-time effects such as lighting will profoundly improve the player immersion. On top, it could also define the futuristic night time of Night City. However, despite the RTX, this game is anyway going to be one of the most famous ones of the year.

6 Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Quarantine

Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Quarantine is said to be a three-player, tactical co-op shooter set in a virus impacted future. Players will fight mutated alien parasites in the game, similar to Crysis. RTX can immensely add to the game's environment, as the main feature of these effects is realistic lighting and shadows. Since the game is going to be a sort of horror co-op, ray tracing can prove to be a game-changer in providing a more lethal and brutal experience. Just imagine shadows morph into a blob of darkness as the zombie-like enemies try to hunt you.

5 Outriders

Outriders is the first significant game by the folks at People Can Fly in years. This game looks like a highly atmospheric third-person shooter and is set to be released in Q4 2020. It is a next-gen title, and RTX can help push it further on the PCs. The game is built on Unreal Engine 4. That will mean smooth gameplay and varied visuals similar to Gears 5. However, all of that can be taken to another level with RTX.  Right effects on the right scenes will make the players see it as a high budget movie.

4 Mafia: Definitive Edition

Mafia: Definitive Edition looks to be a love letter from the developers to the original game. One of the most defying stories in video game history is being revived in the form of a remake.

As good as the game looks. The RTX reflections can make the wet street of the 1930s Lost Heaven will look even better. Just imagine the smoke coming out of buildings somehow being lit by the colorful red rusted bricks around it.

3 Resident Evil Village

There's no doubt that almost every horror game in the world can benefit from proper lighting and shadows. And Resident Evil Village is one of the top games that can add some significant gameplay jump scares with the use of RTX. Firstly, real-time effects such as reflections will add to the scary environment of the game, making players feel terrified throughout the story. Secondly, imagine a boss chase, where the player has to hide under a table, and the wet floor reflects the monster roaming around.

2 Dying Light 2

Dying Light 2 has the most awaited zombie game of the year. The game has delayed multiple times before, as the developers want to craft something special for fans and new players. The game is dark and gritty, full of zombies and volatiles, in a post-apocalyptic open-world. All of this speaks that this game can easily benefit from an overhaul of RTX effects. That makes the immersion much better. The indoor environments will feel realistically lit, and the dark areas will unquestionably give the game a different feel.

1 Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines 2

Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines 2 is the sequel to The Vampire: The Masquerade. This game looks to be a title that will take place in a wet night time environment, with rain and puddles of water, and a massive mixture of neon signs and dark blue sky. Artistically speaking, this game already looks pretty impressive, and with RTX, most of the effects in the game can reach new heights. With bounce light and real-time reflections, breathing a new life into the world.
