For anyone who's looking to upgrade their system or put together a new PC all-together, getting hold of an Nvidia or AMD graphics card is a bit of a struggle at the moment, with tech shortages being a bane on the market for the better part of a year. With Intel's CEO certain the shortages could go on until 2023, the situation is unlikely to get any better, and those looking to purchase new hardware having to be prepared to pay much higher prices. The cost of a GPU has been generally way above the MSRP for some time, and it looks as though products are still selling at extortionate prices.

According to a recent report, the cost of Nvidia cards has seen an increase since October, a trend that has been ongoing since August, with the highest increase being 95% over retail value, especially for places like Europe. However, while AMD products are also still above the MSRP, it seems as though they've gone down since last month, despite them also increasing since the end of summer along with Nvidia GPUs.

While it's not quite the price hike from May, in which some products were more than 300% over MSRP, it still means that the likes of the Nvidia RTX 3080 are being sold in parts of Europe for around €1,500, or just shy of $1,700 US. In an ideal world, this type of GPU should be going for around €719, or just over $800 US. This shows the current state of things as Christmas approaches and people are finding themselves either having to pay huge amounts of money or risk not being able to get hold of any new graphics cards at all.

It's not much better for "team red" either despite the dip, with the AMD RX 6000 GPU averaging twice as much as MSRP, a 9% increase month to month, according to the report. In general, things are still not looking good, and if the current trends are anything to go by, it's unlikely that prices will drop significantly any time soon.

Even with availability perhaps being a little better than they were at one point, consumers are finding themselves in a quandary given how expensive Nvidia and AMD cards currently are. With Nvidia's CEO saying the company may struggle to meet demand, it's a bit of an uncertain time for PC enthusiasts, with predictions saying shortages could go on for maybe another year, which potentially could see prices remaining at these rather ludicrous highs.
