Three months into the new year and it looks as though there haven't been many updates as to when PC gamers will be able to get their hands on an Nvidia or AMD graphics card. The situation has gotten to the point where the former is looking into launching a series of GPUs just for crypto mining to hopefully ease the low supplies. However, it's possible that this may not be the reason why supplies of hardware have been so low lately.

At the Raymond James Institutional Investors Broker Conference Call, which took place on Monday, Chief Financial Officer for Nvidia, Colette Kress, addressed the issue of crypto miners buying up the GPUs saying she doesn't believe this is the reason for the current hardware shortages. She added that the supply issues are likely down to Ampere as well as overall strong demand.

Kress has said that the company's quarter for gaming has proven to be popular and the situation that GPU manufacturers are in would have been the same even if crypto mining wasn't in the equation. While she said that Nvidia would ideally like to have more supply overall, the reality was that demand was extremely high. Given this, it's looking like GPU shortages could continue on into 2022.

Outside that, Kress mentioned the success of the Ampere-based 3000 series which was launched last year. In addition, she discusses the popularity of the company's most recent card, the RTX 3060, which she believes has an even balance of great performance and an affordable price. Unsurprisingly, the 3060 sold out in hours once it was launched. Of course, this is likely to be meaningless information for those who are still waiting to get hold of one, or any of the recent GPU ranges that have been hitting the market at lightning speed.

While Kress is confident that crypto mining is not to blame for the low supply of hardware, some may be wondering why the company is manufacturing graphics cards for this specific purpose if not to stem what many see as a real issue. With the launch of the recent Nvidia midrange RTX 3060 and with Intel set to release their DG2 GPU, there's no doubt that there's a lot of choice out there for PC gamers. However, it doesn't matter how many products are put out because without the ability to purchase any of it, all gamers and PC enthusiasts can do is twiddle their thumbs until stocks become available again.
