Surviving in open world territory with vicious denizens of the realm, harsh weather conditions, other players, and depleting hunger and thirst can be a tough challenge, and there are few in the genre more difficult than Rust. With Facepunch Studio's online title getting a Halloween update recently, it's in a constant state of change as the developers seek to introduce new assets and tweak content. Now it seems as though a new patch brings with it the opportunity for players to gain access to some heavy military equipment.

In a recent post on Steam, followed by the aforementioned update, Rust will now feature military desert base monuments, each of which has a Multiple Launch Rocket System, or MLRS. Players will be able to gain access to these monuments from numerous entrances, where they will be able to utilize the MLRS. Each will be able to fire 12 rockets, which can be countered with SAMs, but otherwise have the potential to cause untold damage. The one stipulation is that rockets cannot be fired at any safe zones in the game, for obvious reasons.

Of course, it won't be as easy as just walking through the front door as players will likely encounter enemies from the base's scientist NPCs. As well as the opportunity to fire rockets at targets, the desert base monuments will also contain a bunch of loot which is imperative to survival in Rust, as well as some oil. Fans can get a jump start on this new activity as the new update has begun rolling out through Steam.

It's difficult to know at this stage what the new missile launchers will do in terms of PvP combat. Rust is already a tough game where survival is difficult, so the opportunity of being in a location where there are no enemy players will, from this point on, seemingly be no guarantee of safety. People are likely going to be scrambling for these military bases, at the very least to swipe as much as they can, but mainly to see how much damage they can cause to areas of the map where other people are residing.

While Rust is considered one of the best open world survival games going, Facepunch Studios' harsh entry sits up there with the likes of 7 Days to Die, Raft and Dying Light. It may be unforgiving at times, but that's part of its challenging appeal, and this new patch is certainly going to make things interesting, especially for newcomers to the game.

Rust is available now on PC, macOS, PS4, and Xbox One.
