PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale may not have been the Super Smash Bros killer Sony wanted it to be, but it has proven to be a consistently entertaining title since day one. With several DLC characters joining the fray over the last few months, one would be forgiven for thinking that Sony Santa Monica was still cooking up fresh batches of characters and levels. Unfortunately, a representative of Sony Santa Monica revealed in an online post that their work providing downloadable combatants for Battle Royale has finished, and no more major downloadable content updates are in development.

Sony cut ties with developer Superbot Entertainment shortly after the release of the game, with Santa Monica Studios being placed in charge of producing downloadable content to support the game post-launch. With sales numbers that fell far below what Sony had initially hoped for prior to release and no major cult following in the foreseeable future, it's safe to say that Sony is moving forward onto new horizons and letting All-Stars go entirely after one last content update later this fall.

The news — delivered via a standard support update post on the Sony forums — states that the company has been grateful for the support received from its fanbase, and detailed plans for the upcoming year in regards to PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale. Sadly, none of those plans include any new characters or stages.

"On a personal note, we want thank everyone for their dedication to the game. There have been a lot of challenges on the development side, and for the players as well, but it's this kind of passion from players that inspires us to try and move forward, even during difficult times."

However, just because the studio is finished developing new characters for the game doesn't mean there'll be no content releasing, as Santa Monica Studios announced that the following items would be released within the coming year:

  • A balance patch set for release this fall based heavily upon fan feedback
  • Dante, Raiden, Heihachi, and Big Daddy will recieve a third set of costumes which were previously part of a US-exclusive pre-order.  To be available for free on August 27th.
  • Zeus and Isaac will also get third costume choices which will be released alongside the balance patch for free.
  • Monthly Leaderboard resets starting this month

It's not often a studio will stay with a title to develop free downloadable content for it, so kudos to Santa Monica for doing just that.

What do you think, Ranters? Was there a Sony character you really wanted them to come out with, or are you fine with Santa Monica Studios shifting their focus elsewhere?
