To say that No Man's Sky has been robustly supported since launch would be an understatement. Despite a very rocky start and a lengthy wait before Hello Games was ready to start rolling out content, No Man's Sky has seen over a dozen substantial updates since 2016. Just this past week it launched the Expeditions update, one of the most exciting yet. Without pausing for a breath, it seems Hello Games is already teasing what's coming next.
Hello Games' Sean Murray shared an intriguing post to Twitter Sunday regarding No Man's Sky. There is no text in the post, leaving just a single image to convey his message. The image features a four-by-four grid with panels for each of No Man's Sky's content updates since launch. In total, there are 15 panels, with the most recent panel being filled in by last week's Expeditions update, but the bigger point of conversation is what belongs in the empty panel at the end.
The final panel in the bottom-right corner of the image is empty, the seeming implication being that Murray is conveying a message, so fans are speculating about what that might be. The most prevalent idea is that Murray is hinting that another update currently in development. Some are even jumping to the conclusion that it could be closer to completion than expected - but again, there's no direct evidence of that.
The next most popular idea goes even further. Rather than focusing on the empty space being representative of a new expansion, it considers the possibility of it being the last expansion. No Man's Sky has been in development for five years, and Hello Games likely has other projects it wants to work on. Perhaps the image hints that Hello Games wants to push one last big update, and then that will be enough.
Obviously, this is all just speculation on the fans' part. There's no evidence of No Man's Sky having another expansion in the works, that an update might arrive soon, or that it could be No Man's Sky's final update. Murray's message could just a celebration of how much content Hello Games has released for the game so far.
If the post is evidence of anything, it's that fans are excited about the future of No Man's Sky, regardless of Hello Games' plans. With Expeditions, No Man's Sky will have continued support for months or even years going forward, regardless of whether there are any more major updates. It's been a long road, but No Man's Sky is in a very good place.
