No Man’s Sky has had one of the biggest redemption stories ever. In addition to the substantial downloadable content added since its release, developer Hello Games has announced cross-play is coming to the game tomorrow.

The update will enable players on PS4, Xbox One, and PC (including VR) to play online together on the same server. This means players across all platforms can visit each other's bases, terraform together, and battle it out in space. Hello Games has been working on the update over the last six months with the hope of making No Man's Sky's multiplayer mode feel denser.

Though substantial, this addition is not a part of what Hello Games teased earlier this year. In April, Sean Murray, Hello Games' founder, revealed that a large update is being worked on and is still to come, though details are slim on what exactly that entails. As with all prior updates to the game, the cross-play function is free on all platforms and supports all modes.

No Man’s Sky has become a vastly different experience since its initial release.  Promised as a multiplayer game focused on space-exploration, many fans were disappointed with the initial result. Players found that multiplayer was bare-bones, with users only being able to see each other players' planets and discoveries, while not being able to directly interact with one another. The disastrous launch prompted Hello Games to go silent on its social media platforms until finally announcing major overhauls for the game.

The game was first revealed at the VGX Awards in 2013, with Sony striking a deal with Hello Games to make No Man's Sky a PS4 exclusive, though the game is now available on may platforms. After the troubled launch, Hello Games was investigated for false advertising in the UK, though the investigation concluded that Hello Games was not at fault.

The updates to the game included adding traditional online multiplayer, while slowly introducing things like base building, capital ships, and underwater exploration. Each has been a part of the major updates seeking to fulfill promises made before the game even launched. Despite being an evolving game, there's no word yet if the game will be made available on next-gen consoles.
