Not too long ago, video game developer Team Ninja revealed that the first piece of paid post-launch content for its action-RPG Nioh is set to release under the name of the Dragon of the North DLC on May 2, 2017, but the title's creators did little to explicate the story behind the forthcoming expansion. Now, thankfully, the game's publishers in Sony Interactive Entertainment have stepped up to deliver some of the narrative details for the DLC.

As evidenced by a fresh post that was published today on the PlayStation Blog, Nioh's first paid DLC will see the game's protagonist William trek toward the new Oshu region, which is highly populated with new Yokai and ruled by the "one-eyed dragon" Masamune Date. In order to effectively combat these enemies, the expansion will include a new weapon in the form of the traditional Japanese sword odachi, along with new magic, armor, ninja skills, and more.

Nioh PvP DLC Releases Early Next Month - Dragon of the North DLC

Those who wish to obtain Nioh's Dragon of the North DLC will be able to do so for $10 as a standalone item. Of course, those who absolutely adore all that the action-RPG has offered so far and wish to go all-in on the first expansion and its subsequent add-ons of Defiant Honor and Bloodshed’s End can do so by buyimg the game's Season Pass for $25.

In addition to the release of Nioh's Dragon of the North DLC, fans will also be privy to free PvP content on the same date of the expansion's release. Although Team Ninja hasn't completely explicated exactly how the player-versus-player materials will work, one has to imagine that it will operate in a similar manner to the feature in the Dark Souls franchise, as Nioh's creators have been heavily influenced by the From Software series.

Taking all of this into consideration, it's great to see Team Ninja ready to provide ample post-launch support for Nioh with its PvP features and the Dragon of the North DLC. The action-RPG has already managed to scale past one million units in sales, so it's it quite likely that having a decent portion of add-ons will give gamers who haven't played the title additional incentive to check it out soon.

Nioh is available now for PlayStation 4.
