Do you remember where you were when the Nintendo Revolution was first announced? Satoru Iwata proudly proclaimed that the device would bring a revolution to the gaming industry and, for better or worse, it certainly delivered on that promise. When you first saw the Wii remote and nun-chuck, what do you think? It looked ridiculous? Brilliant? Ridiculously brilliant? Whether you're a lover or a hater of the Nintendo Wii, if there's one thing we can all agree on, it's that the console really did make you say 'Wow'.

According to Yoshio Sakamoto, co-director of the recent Metroid: Other M, the successor to the Wii will have a similarly surprising effect on the gaming population. In an interview with Spanish website 3DJuegos, the subject of a 'Wii 2' came up, to which Sakamoto stated:

"At Nintendo we always have the obligation to surprise users with a new console. We have never done what others have done. We prefer to create something new that catches attention, and I think this will continue at this time. Surely the new Nintendo machine will leave you all with your mouths open."

It seems clear then that Nintendo won't simply be making an 'ordinary' successor to the Wii. The question now becomes: Where is the innovation going to take place? Will it take place within the controller? This seems most likely; after all, there aren't many spaces in a home console that can encourage innovation. Your TV is there to stay, meaning it would be difficult to enforce a 3D output for all users, and I certainly can't think where else Nintendo could innovate.

But then again, would Nintendo really change the design of the Wiimote? With its simple, sleek design akin to that of a TV remote, it's an integral part of the system, and a large part of why the Wii has become the mainstream success that it has. What could be more commonplace than a television remote?

Personally, I believe that the 'Wii 2' won't herald any truly innovative technology, and instead will deliver what the 'hardcore market' originally wanted from the Wii. By the time the system releases (2014 folks, mark it in your diaries), I believe the Wii 2 will have graphics that make you say 'Wow' (much like the Nintendo 3DS), combined with true 1:1 motion control, all at an affordable price. The system will ship surprisingly soon after its initial unveiling, and will come with two controllers -- one Wiimote/nun-chuck combination, along with something similar to the Classic Controller Pro. Oh, and obviously it will include Wii Sports 2.

Wouldn't that make your jaw drop?

In fact, what would it take you make your jaw drop? Are you happy with your Wii? Are you excited by the possibilities of a new Nintendo home system? Let us know in the comments below.
