Thanks to its nature as a console-handheld hybrid, the Nintendo Switch feels a bit more like a system of the future than its biggest competitors, even if its not quite as powerful under the hood. However, one fan has imagined what the Switch might look like if it was designed way back in the past.

Pop Skin has designed a set of stickers that can be applied to the Switch that give it an appearance inspired by the Super Famicom of the 1990s. The results are very striking, and there will surely be scores of fans who would love to customize their system in this way.

The project sees stickers applied to the Switch, its docking bay, and its Joy-Cons, and the finished product looks very professional indeed. It remains to be seen whether or not Nintendo will release Switch skins, but designs inspired by the company's previous systems would seem to be a great idea to pursue.

Nintendo is clearly aware of the cachet its older consoles have among fans. Last year, the NES Classic Edition was one of the hottest Christmas gifts around, and there are rumors that the company will follow up with a SNES Classic Edition later this year.

However, Nintendo could keep fans' attention squarely on the future by giving them the option to dress up a Switch to look like a SNES. Nostalgia can be a powerful thing, and Nintendo's storied history gives it more capacity than most video game companies to take a step back into history.

For the time being, this fan project is simply a cool custom skin to take a look at. That being said, it would be great to see Nintendo take advantage of its previous successes with a range of officially licensed retro skins — perhaps even as a way of promoting the Switch's upcoming Virtual Console functionality.

The Nintendo Switch is available now.
