Nintendo is finally giving into fans wishes and releasing a neutral color standalone stylus for the Switch later this year. Unfortunately for American fans (and European fans for that matter) the stylus is only getting a release in Japan, or at least that's the only region it is confirmed for thus far.

The stylus appeared this morning in a listing on the Japanese My Nintendo Store page. It is a dark gray that seems to match the default gray on the original Switch console. The stylus will cost 864 yen, tax included, which equals around $8 in USD. It may be very simple, with seemingly no bonus features or functionality, but for what it is that's still a pretty low price. The release date is listed as December 27, 2019.

Notably, this stylus is also getting bundled in with the recently announced new Brain Age game for the Switch. Like the stylus, the game is currently only announced for Japan and is coming out on December 27.

Until now, or technically until December, there was no way for any Switch owners to buy a standalone stylus. The first and only stylus accessory released for the hybrid console came out earlier this summer as a special pre-order bonus for Super Mario Maker 2. It was only released in Japan and Europe. There are still no plans for a way for US Switch owners to walk into a store and buy a stylus for their consoles.

An official Switch stylus has been a high demand accessory since the Switch launch in 2017. Nintendo fans used to using a stylus on the 3DS and WiiU have had no such luck with their latest piece of hardware. Granted, the number of games with touch screen functionality is lower than one may have initially thought, but it seems like it would be crucial for games like Mario Maker 2 and the new Brain Age. It remains odd that while clearly Nintendo has a design for a stylus it is only seeing release in such limited supply and only in certain regions.

The possibility that the stylus is coming to the Americas and Europe still remains. If Brain Age ever gets released internationally, hopefully the stylus will follow. It is certainly an in demand item for a company that has a history of loving to sell accessories for its consoles.
