The original Wii Sports was a phenomenon. It single-handedly sold millions of Wii consoles and became a mainstream fad, standing out as one of the best-selling video game releases of all time. Many gamers have fond memories of Wii Sports, and so that's why there was a decent amount of hype going into the release of Nintendo Switch Sports, the latest installment in the series.

Nintendo Switch Sports reviews were mixed, with some underwhelmed by the game's offerings. But even so, there were some aspects of Nintendo Switch Sports that received a great deal of praise, like how it pays tribute to the Wii Sports games that preceded it. One of the main nods to Wii Sports that one can find in Nintendo Switch Sports is the inclusion of the Mii characters that were featured prominently in the classic games.

Nintendo Switch Sports brought back Miis, but it was missing one of the most popular Miis for offline play: Matt. Many Wii Sports players have considered Matt one of the most talented Miis in the game, and in later years, his reputation saw him turned into a meme. Now Nintendo has brought Matt back into the fray in Nintendo Switch Sports for offline play, though players have to input a special code if they hope to go up against him.

Nintendo Switch Sports: How to Play Against Matt

Any Nintendo Switch Sports players interested in competing against Matt will need to input ZR + R + A or ZL + L + Right on the difficulty select screen. This will swap their opponent to Matt, who is listed as a "legend" in the game. Clearly, Nintendo is well aware of Matt's popularity as a meme. Wii Sports fans may get a kick out of seeing Matt make a comeback in Nintendo Switch Sports, and it will be interesting to see if this generates more buzz for the game.

While there was decent hype for Nintendo Switch Sports leading up to the game's release, excitement around the game seems to have died down. Nintendo Switch Sports had strong sales right out of the gate, but it remains to be seen if the game's longevity will be able to match up with Wii Sports.

Adding Matt to the mix should get people talking about Nintendo Switch Sports again and could very well bring lapsed players back into the fold. And when Nintendo Switch Sports adds golf later this year, there should be even more reason for fans to return to the game.

Nintendo Switch Sports is available now, exclusively for the Nintendo Switch.
