It is an understatement to say that the Nintendo Switch has had a successful run over the past few years. Adding to its list of milestones, the Switch has reportedly surpassed the lifetime sales of the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.

Every couple of months, the Switch seems to break another sales record. The innovative portable console launched in 2017 and quickly became a hot commodity, allowing users to play console quality games on the go. Earlier this year, the Switch became Nintendo's second best selling console behind the Wii, with the belief that the Switch will ultimately catch and beat it. A consistent release of first and third party titles, and the novelty of the console, have helped place the Switch where it is today.

Nintendo has released its latest financial report and with it, lifetime sales metrics of the Nintendo Switch. According to the document, the Switch has sold 89.04 million units as of June 30, 2021. This figure places the Switch ahead of the Xbox 360 and the PS3, which sold 84 million units as of 2014 and 87.4 million units as of 2017 respectively. With the Wii in sight as the next sales target at 101.63 million units, the Switch still has a long way to go before dethroning the Game Boy and Nintendo DS.

Despite this achievement in overall sales, the report specifically provides information on the first quarter of the 2021 fiscal year, which was not as strong as it could have been. In this time, the Switch sold a total of 4.45 million units and 45.29 million software titles. This is a decrease of 21.7% for hardware sales from Q1 of the last fiscal year 10.2% of software sales. Much of last year's success is credited to the launch of Animal Crossing: New Horizons, which released right as the worldwide COVID-19 pandemic began.

With another 12 million units to go before catching the Wii, the Switch has a lot of ground to cover if it should become Nintendo's best selling console ever. The recently announced Nintendo Switch OLED will certainly help in giving the console's overall sales a boost, but whether or not it will be enough is questionable. To much dismay, the Switch OLED is not the rumored Switch Pro, lacking hardware enhancements that would improve game performance or visual fidelity. And with the Steam Deck entering the ring later this year, a more powerful portable console, the Switch has its first real competition, whether Nintendo thinks so or not.

The Nintendo Switch OLED launches on October 8, 2021.
