When id Software released Doom and Doom 2, the gaming world probably felt that the studio had peaked, given that both games have gone on to help shape the modern FPS, the effects of which are still being felt to this day. Then Quake was released in 1996. While still an action title, albeit more gothic, it advanced gaming technology and is considered one of the best first-person shooters of the 1990s. It's also one of those old school games that many would prefer to use a mouse and keyboard on. Luckily, the Nintendo Switch update of the game has now enabled that.

According to a number of sources, the Switch port of Quake, which was released to celebrate the game's 25th anniversary, can now be played using mouse and keyboard controls, if players do not wish to use a control pad. This latest feature was added into the newest update for the game, which went live just a few days ago. A user on Reddit who goes by the alias GeertCu uploaded a photograph showing the Nintendo hybrid console hooked up to the peripherals, with a monitor nearby clearly showing a screenshot from Quake.

The original Quake was given a surprise remaster back in August, which upped the visuals to 4K, as well as adding a brand-new expansion. The remastered version also reinstated some cut content, in which one map, specifically E2M6, had to be scaled back a bit in order for it to comply with file sizes at the time. Ex-id developer John Romero recently commented how pleased he was that the map he created was able to be included in its entirety.

The remaster of Quake had another update very recently, which saw the game adding additional support for multiplayer. This included tweaking the bots and adding more support for them in other maps. The update also included support for those who wished to mod the game, which is something fans have been doing to the original since it was launched way back in the mid 1990s.

Overall, many fans of the original game will likely be pleased that this latest patch will now support mouse and keyboard controls. With the game now back in vogue, not only does it give older gamers an excuse to relive this classic, but there's an opportunity for younger gamers to experience something they perhaps didn't get the chance to first time round. The long and the short of it is, Quake is still worth playing in this modern gaming era.

Quake Remastered is available on PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC.
