One of the most discussed features of the Nintendo Switch Online Service is the ability to play games from the Nintendo Entertainment System. The service went live last week, and is starting with 20 titles from the NES, with more to look forward to each month for players, with an additional nine games coming to the service's catalog in the near future.

In a brand new trailer from Nintendo, many of the features within the service were reiterated to those looking to play some of the most well-known retro games on their Nintendo Switch. The opening sizzle-reel shows off the likes of Super Mario Bros, Mike Tyson's Punch Out, and The Legend of Zelda. Also mentioned in the trailer was the use of the Switch's online components along with each compatible game, allowing for both local cooperative play with friends, and the ability to connect online for a more arcade-style competitive feel.

Many have been wondering what the future holds for the NES games catalog. The video confirms the release schedule for the next three months for the NES service, with three new games coming each of the next three months.

Come October, Nintendo Online subscribers will receive access to Solomon's Key, NES Open, and Dodgeball. In November, Metroid, Mighty Bomb Jack, and Twin Boo will be added to the list. Then rounding out the year for December, Wario's Woods, Ninja Gaiden, and Adventures of Lolo will be added to the game catalog.

Given the format Xbox and PlayStation have had for years with their respective free Games with Gold and PS Plus lineups, Nintendo appears to be doing the same from a classic games approach. While Xbox One and PS4 owners are able to play their free games indefinitely so long as they're subscribed to their console's online service, Nintendo approach to having the games on a streaming platform does leave the possibility of Switch owners someday losing access to some of the service's catalog of classic titles.

Having NES games that can be streamed via the Nintendo Switch is just one of the features offered with Nintendo Switch Online. Along with the classic games lineup, players now require the service in order to play online multiplayer games, as well as being able to upload saved game data onto their cloud storage. Another exclusive offer for online subscribers is the Switch compatible NES-style controllers, which can be charged via the Nintendo Switch dock.
