Nintendo Switch Online is Nintendo's answer to Sony and Microsoft's online services, allowing users to play compatible games with other players. Even though Nintendo was the last to require a subscription, the great thing about Nintendo's online service is how affordable it is. On top of that, subscribers get access to Nintendo's ever-growing library of NES and SNES titles. Anyone who grew up in the 80s or 90s might never have thought that they could one day play some of their favorite NES and SNES games like Donkey Kong Country and Super Mario Kart with their friends online.

Though Nintendo Switch Online boasts a quality amount of titles, it is still a drop in the bucket compared to the sheer amount of games on both of Nintendo's consoles. Fans are eager for more content that comes along with a Nintendo Switch Online subscription, as games are added periodically throughout the year. This can be frustrating to fans of Nintendo, as there are still many possible games that fans are eager to see a return. This is because many titles from the NES and SNES era are difficult for fans to obtain, so the Nintendo Switch Online catalog is the next best possibility.

RPGs That Should Return on the SNES Collection

Final Fantasy 6, Dragon Quest 5, earthbound

The Super Nintendo was a wonderful console for experimenting on new genres and expanding old ones. One of the oldest genres in gaming is the RPG, and the SNES has many highly regarded RPGs that would make the Nintendo Switch Online subscription sweeter. However, some RPG titles on the SNES won't be difficult to get as they are re-released frequently, such as Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster. There are still plenty more RPGs that could be added to the SNES library making it more desirable for fans of the genre, including:

  • Earthbound
  • Chrono Trigger
  • Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars
  • Dragon Quest 5/6
  • Secret of Mana
  • Lufia 2
  • Illusion of Gaia

These are among some of the most classic RPGs on the Super Nintendo system, not counting Final Fantasy as despite originating on the Nintendo consoles, their remasters will not likely be coming to the Switch in the near future. The SNES collection does have Breath of Fire 1 and 2, hopefully in the next few updates to the SNES collection fans of the genre can see Earthbound or Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars.

Fighting Games That Should Return on the SNES Collection

Final Fight 1 for SNES

The fighting genre on the SNES includes games like Street Fighter, or the less-currently popular Beat'em Up genre. Whichever camp fans might fall into, it's no secret there were plenty of these type of games back in the day. As such, there is a massive missed opportunity if at least some of these don't see a return, if not at least to utilize the online multiplayer feature of the SNES collection.

  • Street Fighter 2
  • Mortal Kombat 1/2/3
  • Dragon Ball Z Super Butouden 1/2/3
  • Dragon Ball Z: Hyper Dimension
  • Final Fight 1/2/3
  • Super Double Dragon
  • Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 4: Turtles in Time

Even though the Dragon Ball Z games are almost exclusively in Japanese, that hasn't stopped Nintendo from releasing Japanese-only games into the collection. As they are fighters, they don't necessarily need a translation, though Dragon Ball Z Super Butouden 1 and 2 both have text-driven story modes. It would be a shame if players couldn't get some of the more iconic Fighting or Beat'em Up games, as being able to play them online with a friend would really add a lot more value.

Puzzle Games That Should Return on the SNES Collection

Mario's Super Picross gameplay screenshots

The puzzle genre is in no short supply on any video game console, and that includes both the NES and SNES. Though many well-received puzzle games for the SNES were released in Japan exclusively, nothing seems to be off-limits when it comes to adding to the SNES library

  • Picross 1-6
  • Bust-A-Move
  • The Lost Vikings 1/2
  • Mario and Wario

Mario's Super Picross is already part of the SNES collection, meaning there is probably an audience for the game, and Picross is enjoyed by many. Mario and Wario and The Lost Vikings 1 and 2 are puzzle platformers that players don't see much of nowadays, making the Nintendo Switch Online perfect for people to re-experience these gems.

Strategy Games That Should Return on the SNES Collection

Ogre Battle SNES game battle

Strategy games were not uncommon in the SNES days, probably because people have loved strategy games since well before video games came into existence. Still, the SNES had a huge lineup of strategy games and many of them are considered classics to this day. Though many of these games were only released in Japan, it should still go without saying that bringing a couple of these to the growing library will add more value.

  • Fire Emblem: Mystery of the Emblem
  • Fire Emblem: Genealogy of the Holy War
  • Fire Emblem Thracia 776
  • Ogre Battle: The March of the Black Queen
  • Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together
  • Romance of the Three Kingdoms 2/3/4
  • Uncharted Waters: New Horizons

Sports Games That Should Return on the SNES Collection

Even back in the 16-bit era, sports games were plentiful. As a result, there were many enjoyable sports games on the SNES, and this is proven as Nintendo has already brought to the library the likes of Super TennisSuper Soccer, and Super Baseball Simulator 1,000. Though the SNES library even includes two Tennis games, it is sorely missing other kinds of sports which, like fighting games, would benefit from the online capability of Nintendo's subscription service.

  • Super Bowling
  • NHL '94 / '98
  • NBA Jam: Tournament Edition
  • Tecmo Super Bowl 3: Final Edition

Aside from the games mentioned, there are some more noteworthy additions that would add more quality to the SNES library, and therefore the Nintendo Switch Online service. These include simulation games such as Harvest Moon and Simcity 2000, the racing trilogy Top Gear 1/2/3000, horror adventure Clock Tower, and free-time destroyer Mario Paint. Though, many of the games listed here will be more difficult than others for Nintendo to acquire the rights to distribute among the SNES library. Hopefully, as Nintendo begins to slow down how many games are released for the SNES library, fans will see new libraries added to the subscription service for consoles like the Game Boy, Nintendo 64, GameCube, and more.

Nintendo Switch Online is available on the Nintendo Switch for a monthly or yearly subscription.
