When Nintendo first announced that Nintendo 64 games were coming to Nintendo Switch Online, the reaction was positive. Fans had been asking for more consoles to be represented through Nintendo Switch Online for years, and Nintendo was finally moving forward with a new platform. But then Nintendo revealed how much it was going to cost for people to upgrade to the Nintendo Switch Online Expansion Pack was going to cost, and opinion on the service started to turn sour.

Anyone that wants to play Nintendo 64 games on their Nintendo Switch through the Switch Online service has to pay $50 per year for the Expansion Pack, which is $20 more expensive than the standard Switch Online subscription. They get access to some Sega Genesis games and the Animal Crossing: New Horizons paid DLC content as well, but even so, there are many who have voiced their displeasure with such a drastic price hike.

$50 is a steep asking price for some Nintendo 64 games, but there is one missing feature that could make it genuinely worthwhile. Nintendo has made it possible to play the multiplayer modes for these Nintendo 64 games online for the first time ever, though it's restricted to playing with people on one's friends list. Expanding the Nintendo Switch Online N64 game multiplayer functionality could go a long way in making it a more appealing prospect.

If Nintendo was able to implement matchmaking functionality to the Nintendo Switch Online Expansion Pack games, it could make it a lot more worthwhile for users to pay the $50 asking price. While being able to play classic games like Mario Kart 64 and Mario Tennis is great, it would be even better if users were able to matchmake with other Nintendo Switch Online Expansion Pack subscribers around the world. Imagine being able to enjoy the multiplayer of a game like Mario Kart 64 whenever, as opposed to having to either get a group of people together like back in the day or convincing friends to sign up for the Expansion Pack.

Unfortunately, Nintendo has made no indication that it ever plans on adding matchmaking to the Nintendo Switch Online Expansion Pack Nintendo 64 games, and so fans shouldn't hold their breath for the feature. But while this functionality may or may not ever come to the NSO N64 games, hopefully Nintendo does something to address concerns fans have had about the service since launch.

New features may be asking for a lot, but fixing what's already there should be something Nintendo prioritizes, one would think. Nintendo Switch Online Expansion Pack suffers from lag and a multitude of other issues that fans are hoping to see resolved, though Nintendo has not acknowledged the problems so far.

Nintendo's future plans for the Switch Online Expansion Pack are mostly secret for now, though fans do know that new game additions are in the pipeline, at least. There are plenty more Nintendo 64 games to look forward to, but hopefully those new game additions come with improved functionality as well.
