Many video game fans might find themselves in a race against the clock to get the newest tech as soon as they can. With the Nintendo Switch OLED model coming out in a matter of days, some fans may have it on pre-order, or are planning to get soon for many different reasons. However, news has come out suggesting there may be a chance that the dreams of a Nintendo Switch Pro is still achievable, and it may be coming soon.

News reports suggest the Nintendo Switch OLED model was originally meant to have 4K support like many players hoped for. Some anonymous developers have stated the Switch OLED dev kits they were given have 4K support, with Nintendo pushing that their titles should deal with the new feature extensively. Due to tech shortages, the chip that was needed for the feature wasn't available, and that leaves the developers with potentially 4K-capable Switch games they can't use yet.

What Devs Have Said Regarding a 4K Switch Release

In a report about the Switch OLED's lost feature, anonymous developers implied they weren't even told about the OLED Switch having to go without 4K until its reveal trailer released. That left them wondering what to do about the games they were developing, but they were quick to mention they were not concerned about it. Apparently, they already have an idea on when these games can release in the future.

Many of the developers who have received this 4K Switch dev kit mention they have a feeling that their games can release sometime in 2022, aiming for in the middle of the year or its holiday season. While this could simply be their estimate on when they can work backward and make the game more suitable for a current Switch, there's a chance a 4K-capable Switch may be at least announced halfway through 2022. It seems the only thing holding Nintendo back from releasing its newer, more powerful hybrid console was simply just not having the chip in time for the OLED console.

Nintendo's Console Release Windows

When it comes to the chances of a Nintendo Switch Pro releasing in 2022 after the OLED, something that needs to be kept in mind is Nintendo's track record when it comes to updating devices. Technology is an ever-evolving industry, and if Nintendo can find a way to innovate its current console, it ends up on the market in some way, shape, or form. Some people may think releasing another Switch so soon is a risky move with sales, but Nintendo has done similar market strategies for the last several years.

The strategy of Nintendo releasing upgraded and improved versions of its products has been seen since the early 2000s, starting with the Game Boy Advance. The Game Boy Advance SP and Micro were released in 2003 and 2005, respectively. The same was seen for the DS and the DSi. With the 3DS, releases became yearly, to the extent many fans would joke that buying a console would just lead to Nintendo announcing another one.

While this precedent deals with the company's handheld products, the Switch is a hybrid, so it can't exactly be written off so easily. The Nintendo Switch Lite released two years after the original, and while it has been some time, Nintendo had likely been using that wisely. There still remains a strong chance that after the work it took to potentially make a 4K Switch a reality, Nintendo might find a way to get it in the hands of players soon. With that in mind, fans still desiring a Nintendo Switch Pro may want to hold onto their money and see if it comes to pass.

The Nintendo Switch OLED model releases October 8.
