The release of the Nintendo Switch in early 2017 took the world by storm as Nintendo's hybrid handheld and home console saw massive success following its highly-anticipated debut with major titles like The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild buoying its launch. The popular console has already sold over 100 million units in the five years and recently passed the Wii to become Nintendo's best-selling home console worldwide. Now, a new report shows that the Switch has recently crossed another major milestone with the portable console pushing further into the bestsellers list. The Switch has been one of the most popular video games on the market since the portable/home console hybrid launch in March 2017 with the console previously amassing colossal sales streaks, sitting as the best-selling console for nearly three years from November 2018 until September 2021. The console has seen releases from nearly every one of Nintendo's major ongoing series with many games like Breath of the Wild and Super Mario Odyssey being praised as some of the best in their respective franchises. Now, a new report from the NPD shows the Switch has passed the PlayStation 4 in lifetime sales.RELATED: Nintendo Switch Sales Expected to Decrease by 10% Due to Supply Chain IssuesA new sales report from market research company The NPD Group confirms that the Switch's sales during April 2022 have seen the console officially surpass one of its main rivals in its early years in the PS4. The new sales numbers place the Switch as the fourth best-selling home console of all time in the US, sitting behind the PS2, Xbox 360, and Wii, and the sixth highest when combining home console and handheld sales. Notably sitting ahead of the Switch on the combined list are two other Nintendo platforms, the Game Boy and Nintendo DS.

The thread from NPD Executive Director Mat Piscatella also gives several other details about video game sales during the month of April. The PlayStation 5 emerged as the top-selling console of April with LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga emerging as the top game of the month, also debuting as the second best-selling game of the year. Nintendo's recently released Nintendo Switch Sports also topped charts as the fifth best-selling game of April with Nintendo having seven entries in the Top 20.

The Switch's massive milestone comes as the most recent accolade in a year that has already seen major releases and highly-anticipated reveals for Nintendo. Debuting earlier in the year, Pokemon Legends: Arceus and Nintendo Switch Sports have already seen success for the iconic developer, and upcoming games like Splatoon 3 and Xenoblade Chronicles 3 will look to keep Nintendo's momentum going throughout the year. Passing the PS4 in sales will add another accolade to the storied history of one of Nintendo's most popular platforms of all time.
