The Switch has become one of Nintendo’s best-selling consoles in Japan, according to a Japanese video game magazine. The console recently became Nintendo’s sixth best-selling system in its home region, and it will likely climb higher in the coming months.

Home to video game giants such as Nintendo and Sony, Japan is the one of the world’s top exporters of gaming hardware. Nintendo’s products make up a great amount of those exports, as the company’s products have become synonymous with gaming culture around the world. The Switch has helped drive Nintendo’s success in recent years. Unlike its predecessor, the Switch is able to rival competitors such as PlayStation and Xbox consoles, as the Switch accounted for 87 percent of console sales in Japan in 2020.

This is an impressive feat, especially considering that the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S both launched in 2021. The proof is in the statistics, as the Switch has become Japan’s sixth bestselling console of all time according to Famitsu, which publishes weekly console sales charts. According to the magazine, the Switch has sold more than 19 million units in Japan, now passing the Famicom.

It likely won’t be long before the Switch moves up on the chart. It should soon surpass the PSP, which currently holds the spot for Japan’s fifth best-selling system with 19,690,000 units sold. It is also easy to imagine that it will eventually pass surpass the PS2’s Japan sales, which currently holds the fourth spot on the chart with almost 22 million sales. The Switch has already surpassed the PS1 and Game Boy Advanced in Japanese sales.

However, the Switch still has a long way to go before it will surpass the top three systems on the charts, all of which were developed by Nintendo. The Nintendo 3DS holds the number three spot with 24,730,000 units sold. The Game Boy comes in second, with 32,470,000 units sold. Finally, the DS holds the top spot, with almost 32 million units sold. While it will be some time before the Switch surpasses 3DS sales in Japan, the Switch has outsold the 3DS in the United States.

It is safe to say that the Switch is currently dominating the console market, not only in Japan but around the world. According to an NPD Group report released at the beginning of 2021, the Switch also topped 2020 U.S. sales in both units sold and sales dollars. That included the month of December, after the release of the PS5 and Xbox Series X.
