Few video game controllers are as popular as those made for the Nintendo GameCube, which is why re-releases of its controllers have been seen for modern consoles such as the Switch — with some Japanese-exclusive variants themed after Mario, Zelda, and Pokemon in 2018. That popularity has resulted in a number of fans trying their hands at creating custom controllers based on the GameCube, even going so far as to take over a competitor's hardware.

A Reddit user named GardnerIsTheGOAT posted an image of what they call their "Pro Controller X" to the r/gaming subreddit today, showcasing an Xbox controller that has been modified to work on the Nintendo Switch and modeled after the iconic purple-and-yellow colors of the GameCube controller. They say this creation came about because despite loving their Switch, they have an "undying loyalty" to the Xbox One controller.

GardnerIsTheGOAT says the controller has some custom parts, such as a special home button created by Battle Beaver Customs and stickers for other face buttons, but the rest is "regular Xbox controller pieces" except for a Brooks X One adaptor that allows the device to work on PS4 and Switch with motion controls. A similar venture was taken on by a fan named Madmorda, who gave their joy-cons a GameCube theme using original parts from the older controllers.

The comments on GardnerIsTheGOAT's post feature a mix of people either in love with the design or dreading the idea of using something like it, though the creator assures that they play Super Smash Bros. Ulltimate with it and enjoy the better Z button to use as Samus. Their controller certainly seems more comfortable to use at a distance than something like the GameCube joy-cons made with an actual split-up controller by YouTuber Shank Mods.

There is plenty of room in the video game marketplace for custom console controllers both made by fans and officially released by companies. Microsoft's Xbox One controller has seen many designs throughout the console's life, from basic custom paint jobs to specialty looks based on titles such as Halo 5 or Sea of Thieves.

Making an Xbox controller based on a competitor's console like the GameCube is an interesting venture, to say the least, but one that seems largely successful for GardnerIsTheGOAT. It should be cool to see what new kinds of designs come to fruition as the next-generation PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X bring new controllers to the table.
