It is no surprise that the Nintendo Switch has performed so well since launch, but Nintendo’s ambitions do not stop there. For the next fiscal year, Nintendo CEO Tatsumi Kimishima stated that he wants the Nintendo Switch to sell 20 million units, according to an interview with Kyoto Shimbun.

In the same interview, Kimishima also stated, “It was a bigger hit than we were hoping. The unique ability to play it as a home console, but also bring it out with you, was a hit feature.” This feature may very well be the Switch's biggest selling point, as it allows gamers to take console-quality titles with them on the go.

However, if Nintendo wants to keep the Switch's momentum going, it can't just rest on its laurels. Attempting to ship even more units in the second year, Nintendo plans to bolster digital content sales to make the system even more appealing. Kimishima wants to release “an abundance of digital content” to further support the lifespan of the Switch, which could surpass the Nintendo Wii in sales in some countries.

Pokemon Nintendo Switch feature wishlist

Another key aspect of the Switch is its game library. Undoubtedly, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild did fantastic on the console, but moving into the next fiscal year, Pokemon for the Switch may take the stage. With its rumored 2018 release window, many gamers reluctant to pick up a Switch may very well do so then considering Pokemon Sun and Moon was the last generation to appear on the Nintendo 3DS.

According to Gamestop, the Nintendo Switch had one of the most successful launches experienced by the company in years, and its success does not seem to end there. Concerning shortages, Nintendo is increasing production; concerning games, its library is expanding. It remains to be seen if Switch sales will meet the expectations of CEO Kimishima, but with all its potential, it would be no surprise to see it hit the 20 million mark.
