Without a doubt, the Nintendo Switch not only had an incredibly successful debut year in terms of giving critics and fans a great new platform on which to play fantastic games like The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Super Mario Odyssey, but also the high quality of the new hardware and software resulted in a lucrative 2017, too. As a matter of fact, the system continues to sell well, as the American market research company known as the NPD Group has now reported that the console sold 1.5 million units in the U.S. alone during December 2017.

According to the NPD Group's data, the Nintendo Switch managed to sell more units during the month of December last year than its competitors in Sony Interactive Entertainment's PlayStation 4 and Microsoft's Xbox One. With this being the case, the Big N definitely has pulled off a financial feat, as December is typically considered to be the one of the busiest months in the gaming calendar.

At the beginning of January 2018, Nintendo announced the Switch was the fastest-selling console in US history, with the new system having sold 4.8 million units since its introduction in March 2017, and its success seems to have rubbed off on the company's other products. As it so happens, the Big N has reported sales of 750,000 Nintendo 3DS units during December 2017, which is a "27 percent increase over the same period a year ago."

Taking all of this into consideration, the Nintendo Switch definitely made a major splash when it arrived on the scene early last year, and it has since made a wonderful and seemingly lasting impression on fans and those within the industry. As time progresses, though, Nintendo is going to have to continue to prove that the system is worthy competition to the likes of the PS4 and Xbox One. Hopefully, the development of games like Metroid Prime 4 and a Pokemon RPG for the console will help ensure more folks flock to the Switch in the future.
