A user on NeoGAF discovers a new patent filed by Nintendo that depicts a touchscreen game controller, which is possibly the controller planned for the Nintendo NX.
While there are still a handful of major first-party games coming to the Wii U, many gamers are looking ahead to the company’s next console. Codenamed the Nintendo NX, Nintendo has been tight-lipped about the system since it was announced, with no plans on discussing it until next year at the earliest. That being said, a recently discovered patent could possibly clue us in onto what the console’s controller will entail.
The patent, filed by Nintendo last June, describes the device in detail. It is oval shaped, and is mostly comprised of a touchscreen. There are two “operation sticks” on the left and right side of the device, and handles that allow players to grip and hold it like they would any other gaming controller. There also appears to be shoulder buttons on the top of the device as well.
While there’s still some unknown factors regarding this new patent, it seems clear that it is describing a video game controller. And while it still has some gimmicky features – such as the touchscreen – it definitely resembles a more traditional controller as opposed to the Wii remote or the Wii U GamePad. Furthermore, its design also seems to corroborate the rumors that the Nintendo NX will be a hybrid of a home game console and a handheld, so perhaps it is meant to be the successor to both the 3DS and the Wii U simultaneously.
Unfortunately, until Nintendo officially comments on the patent, all one can do is speculate about whether or not this is the controller meant for the Nintendo NX. In the meantime, some other Nintendo patents possibly offer even more insight into the NX. For example, Nintendo filed a patent for a console that would not use discs, which is certainly a possibility for the NX, though keep in mind that many patents filed by companies wind up on the cutting room floor before ever actually being produced for the masses.
So far, there are very few concrete details regarding the device, except that the NX will not be Android-based as was previously rumored. Nintendo has yet to confirm or deny any of the other rumors about the NX, so the door is still open for the console to feature virtual reality technology, for example. In any case, this newly discovered patent will certainly fuel even more rumors and speculation regarding the NX in the coming months.
Whatever the Nintendo NX ultimately becomes, one thing is for certain, and that is Nintendo needs another hit console. The Wii U has been a major disappointment for the company, especially compared to the virtually unprecedented success of the Wii, and the NX is Nintendo’s opportunity to regain their footing in the home console market. With Nintendo NX dev kits reportedly sent to developers, hopefully Nintendo will be ready to discuss the device soon.
At this point, the Nintendo NX is confirmed to exist by Nintendo, but there is no release date yet.
