Since its release, the PS4 game Dreams has inspired creators to build unique experiences. Although the creative platform has spawned many unique creations– like a photorealistic breakfast– it hosts an equal number of fan creations based on existing intellectual properties. People have previously raised concerns about copyright issues and whether certain recreations would be allowed. But now, these concerns have been realized.

Although most fan creations, like a 3D take on Stardew Valley's Pelican Town, have provided a unique take on the media they pay homage to, originality has not stopped Nintendo from reclaiming its intellectual property. In a recent Twitter thread, Dreams creator Piece of Craft revealed that the major developer had issued a complaint against his Mario character model.

Sony of Europe then locked the ability to edit the character model. Although Piece of Craft's Mario was previously available for other Dreams players to use in their own creations, Sony also removed the character model from circulation, making it impossible to find. In response, the Dreams creator called Sony's warning a "slap on the wrist," and said that he had a backup plan for this scenario. However, he also noted that he had no idea whether or not Nintendo would attempt to take down the creations that had used his model.

This news comes as a disappointment to Dreams creators, but most are not surprised. Nintendo has a history of fiercely protecting its IPs. In 2016, for example, the developer struck down Pokemon Uranium, a popular fan game. Nintendo's highly criticized YouTube Creator Program also required let's players and streamers to share their revenue or face copyright strikes. Although Nintendo has eased up in some respects, as it did when it ended the Creator Program in 2018, the developer clearly has no intention of letting too much fan work fall through the cracks.

Although Dreams might strike many as merely a platform for fan creations, the PS4 game offers a lot of artistic value. With the tools that the game offers, creators have been able to showcase their work and get jobs at game studios. Although these artists' use of their work will be limited by certain terms, it still serves to show every creator's talent and passion.

Dreams is available now exclusively for the PlayStation 4.
