Yesterday, Nintendo surprised everyone by announcing the Nintendo Labo. A DIY playset designed with younger audiences in mind, the kits would allow players to have all new experiences on the Nintendo Switch by using peripherals made out of cardboard.

Officially, only two Nintendo Labo Toy-Con kits have been announced. These include the Robot Kit (players can build their own cardboard robot) and the Variety Kit (including an RC car, a piano, a fishing rod, a house, and a motorbike), but the announcement trailer for the Labo hinted at several future Toy-Cons kits too.

Some Nintendo Labo peripherals featured in the trailer include: a bird, a steering wheel and pedals, a camera, a gun, a pedal for a drumkit, a joystick and a few other pieces that look interesting but don't have clear gameplay purposes. None of these peripherals are mentioned on the Nintendo Labo website and they aren't listed as Toy-Cons that can be made with the Variety or Robot Kits, either. That said, though, these will presumably be part of the next Toy-Cons sets that Nintendo officially announces.

Assuming that these are going to be made available in future, these proposed peripherals have a lot of potential uses. For example, the drumkit could be used for some sort of music rhythm game (like a Nintendo Labo version of Guitar Hero), while the steering wheel could be used for all kinds of Nintendo Switch racing games, including Mario Kart 8 Deluxe.

Some fans are also speculating that the camera peripheral could be used for a Nintendo Switch version of Pokemon Snap. The entire point of the Labo sets is that they make use of players' imaginations. Nintendo will be glad to see that it is already inspiring players to think of all the fun ways the peripherals can be used.

That gun peripheral is decidedly less kid-friendly than the other Toy-Con models, but it could be used for ports of first-person shooter games. Wolfenstein 2: The New Colossus is headed to the Nintendo Switch soon, for example, and using a Toy-Con with that game could prove to be extremely entertaining.

With the first Nintendo Labo Toy-Con kits being released in April, these other teased peripherals could be released in batches in the months after the initial launch. This would allow Nintendo to get this first wave of content onto store shelves ahead of the holiday shopping rush. Anyone picking up a Nintendo Switch for Christmas may be swayed by the swell of Labo playsets too, helping Nintendo to make bank from its new cardboard-based initiative.

Nintendo Labo’s Variety Kit and Robot Kit will release on April 20, 2018 in the US, and April 27, 2018 in Europe for the Switch.
