Sony sent shock waves around the gaming community when it announced that, for the first time in 24 years, it wouldn't be appearing at E3 in 2019. The unprecedented move by Sony raised questions as to whether other big names would be missing from the event, but today, Nintendo is affirming that it still considers E3 to be of significant value when it comes to delivering its message.

Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aime detailed the reasons E3 remains a priority for the company, calling its attendance at the event a "no-brainer." In his relatively lengthy explanation, Fils-Aime touched on the importance of messaging and consumer engagement, emphasizing E3's role as the leading gaming event when it comes to providing an opportunity for developers and manufacturers to communicate with the community.

"E3, for those five days, is the opportunity for the world to find out what's new for video games as entertainment. And during that time, we generate more engagement than... whether it's CES or Comic-Con, or other big entertainment events."

Just as Sony's presentations have increased in grandiosity over the last decade, Nintendo aims to adjust its approach each year to best suit the content it's marketing, from how it utilizes booth space to its messaging strategy.

Smash Bros. Ultimate artwork

Nintendo certainly had a big year at E3 2018, showcasing a playable Super Smash Bros. Ultimate demo and unveiling a slew of exciting new games. What will be seen and revealed at Nintendo's 2019 presentation is largely a mystery at this point.

While highly unlikely, it's possible that Nintendo plans to announce a new system at E3 2019. Considering the Switch is less than two years old, this kind of speculation is usually unwarranted. However, a rumor made the rounds earlier this year that an upgraded version of the Switch is in the works, complete with beefed up hardware and 4k output.

As for Sony, skipping E3 doesn't necessarily mean there won't be any big news from the company in 2019. In fact, if the rumors hold up, Sony could be gearing up to announce the PS5 at PSX 2019 in December. If so, a 2020 release date for the PS4's successor wouldn't be out of the question. Of course, it's always prudent to take rumors like this one, as well as the one regarding the Nintendo Switch, with a heaping dose of salt.
