September is shaping up to be a good month for gaming events. Not only has a Disney and Marvel Games Showcase been recently confirmed for September 9, but a Ubisoft Forward is taking place on September 10.

Then, of course, there is the rumored PlayStation Showcase, which may or may not take place on September 8. Every September of the past few years has seen Sony hold their major event, essentially an E3-level event, and so it stands to reason fans can expect another sometime next month. Nintendo, at the same time, is likely to host a Direct next month too. "Direct" is currently trending on Twitter with over 150K tweets, not because Nintendo has confirmed anything yet, but because fans expect it to relatively soon.

Nintendo Hasn't Missed a September Direct in 6 Years

nintendo switch schedule direct announcements reveals bayonetta 3 kirby

2022 has been a strong year for the Nintendo Switch, but that year is quickly coming to an end. Nintendo still has some heavy hitters on the way, like Splatoon 3, Pokemon Scarlet and Violet, and Bayonetta 3. However, many fans are hoping to see what Nintendo has lined up for 2023, especially with the only real game confirmed for next year being The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild 2, and it has faced numerous delays. Fans should take its current release window with some skepticism, but what matters is not when it releases, but how it releases. Ultimately, it's time for a Nintendo Direct, and there is precedent here.

Ever since 2016, Nintendo has hosted a direct in September. It's a tradition at this point, as that goes even further back than PlayStation Showcases happening in September. Four of the six have also taken place within the first two weeks of September, meaning the next one could take place around the same time as all of the aforementioned events. However, the last two took place in the second half of the month, so it's hard to say for sure. Taking place in the latter half of the month is no doubt more appealing, as to get some distance from the events.

With the sole exception of 2020, it's also worth mentioning each of these were major, multi-title Directs. That doesn't guarantee this September's will be, but it does make that seem more likely. September 2020 saw a Nintendo Direct Mini take place, but this dealt more with the shifting landscape at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic than it did anything else. While there are still a ton of questions to be answered ultimately, what's clear is Nintendo fans are excited and may have a lot to look forward to next month.

A Nintendo Direct has not been formally announced.
