After the last showcase this past June, Nintendo fans got another Nintendo Direct today on September 23, 2021. The newest set of announcements had a mix of footage from previously revealed titles as well as world premieres for brand-new upcoming games.
In addition to the game trailers and announcements, other Nintendo streams have been announced for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate and Animal Crossing: New Horizons. Both directs will be streamed live in October. However, for now, here's all of the titles showcased during the September 2021 Nintendo Direct.
Monster Hunter Rise: Sunbreak
The first game shown off in this Sirect was Monster Hunter Rise and it's upcoming DLC expansion, Sunbreak. Nothing is really known yet regarding the plot behind this new story, as only a teaser was shown. It is curently set to release in summer 2022.
Mario Party Superstars
More footage has been released for Mario Party Superstars, showing off its playable boards. While Space Land and Peach's Birthday Cake were revealed in the first announcement trailer, Woody Woods, Yoshi's Tropical Island, and Horror Land are now also confirmed to be in the lineup.
Minigame-only courses are also among the revealed aspects in this newest trailer. There are seven confirmed minigame courses, with players able to compare high scores online. All modes are additionally available for online play. The current release date for Mario Party Superstars is October 29, 2021.
Voice of Cards: The Isle Dragon Roars
Originally teased a few weeks ago, the worldwide trailer for Voice of Cards: The Isle Dragon Roars premiered during this Nintendo Direct. It takes the form of a tabletop card game in which characters, towns, and enemies are all represented by cards. Yoko Taro is the creative director behind the title, leading to a lot of speculation behind what this seemingly simple game has in store given his prior history with the NieR franchise. It will be available on October 28, 2021.
Disco Elysium - The Final Cut
A 2019 award-winning role-playing game by ZA/UM, Disco Elysium will be coming to the Nintendo Switch. This release will be the Final Cut edition, which first released back in March 2021 for other platforms. Switch owners will be able to purchase the game digitally on October 12, 2021 and physically in early 2022.
Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity - Expansion Pass
Coming earlier than previously announced is the second wave of DLC for Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity. In the footage shown, Purah and Robbie are new playable characters set to be available. Purchasing this wave of DLC will also give players access to a new story, stages, character actions, and one more playable character who has yet to be shown. It will release for players on October 29, 2021.
Chocobo GP
From Square Enix comes a new racing game that stars various characters seen throughout the Final Fantasy series: Chocobo GP. In it, players will race against their opponents with a variety of vehicles, use magic to hinder other racers, and use special character abilities to gain helpful advantages. This title is currently set to release sometime in 2022 for the Switch.
Kirby and the Forgotten Land
One of the biggest titles to be revealed in this Nintendo Direct was Kirby and the Forgotten Land. This game has Kirby take on a brand-new dimension as he gains the ability to move freely in 3D around new environments, similar to that of 3D Super Mario platformers.
Many of Kirby's classic copy abilities were showcased throughout the trailer, with the new movement style affecting how these abilities work. It is unknown if the game will take the classic level approach or be more open-ended like Kirby and the Amazing Mirror. The current release plan has this game set to come out in spring 2022.
Mario Golf: Super Rush
A free update to Mario Golf: Super Rush was among the announcements during this Direct. The update includes Koopa Troopa and Ninji as playable golfers, as well as two new playable courses. As of this writing, the update is now available for download.
Disney Magical World 2: Enchanted Edition
Originally from the Nintendo 3DS library, Disney Magical World 2 is set to be re-released for the Nintendo Switch as Disney Magical World 2: Enchanted Edition. In it, players can interact with Disney characters, create costumes and furniture, and explore different Disney worlds. It is currently set to release this holiday season.
Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic
Another re-release set to come to the Nintendo Switch is Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, which will be available for the platform on November 11, 2021. This comes ahead of the new KOTOR remake, and pre-orders for the classic Star Wars title are available now on the Switch eShop.
Dying Light 2: Stay Human - Cloud Version and Dying Light: Platinum Edition
Both games in the Dying Light survial horror series are set to have a Nintendo Switch release. Dying Light 2 will only be available via cloud streaming, however, requiring players to have a strong Internet connection at all times. The first game, Dying Light: Platinum Edition, will be released on October 19, 2021, with pre-orders currently available. Dying Light 2: Stay Human - Cloud Version will be released on February 4, 2022.
Triangle Strategy
Back in February 2021, a demo released for the upcoming 2.5D strategy game Triangle Strategy. Based on this feedback, developers made changes to the title in order to make the best experience possible for players. Some of these changes were outlined in the footage shown during this month's Nintendo Direct, with the game set to release on March 4, 2022. Pre-orders are now available.
Metroid Dread
New gameplay footage has been released for Metroid Dread, the next game in the Metroid series. Samus is tasked to investigate an alien parasite on Planet ZDR. She must explore the various environments contained within the planet and figure what caused the robots originally sent to investigate to go dark. Players will be able to get Metroid Dread alongside the Switch OLED model on October 8, 2021.
Shadowrun Trilogy
All three titles in the Shadowrun series will be coming to the Nintendo Switch sometime in 2022. This includes Shadowrun Returns, Shadowrun: Dragonfall, and Shadowrun: Hong Kong. It is unknown if the DLC for these titles will be included, or if the games can be purchased seperately.
Castlevania Advance Collection
More of the Castlevania series is coming to the Nintendo Switch, with the Castlevania Advance Collection now available for digital purchase from the Switch eShop. This collection includes Castlevania: Circle of the Moon, Castlevania: Harmony of Dissonance, Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow, and Castlevania: Dracula X. In addition to the games, players who buy the collection will get access to an artwork gallery, ROM region selection, an encyclopedia, and a music player.
Actraiser Renaissance
An HD remake of the 1990 city-building platformer for SNES, Actraiser, has been revealed for the Nintendo Switch. Actraiser Renaissance has players clear out lands from danger during platforming sections and then rebuild the country in their own image. Players have the choice of how their build up their land, and clear out areas that need to be removed. As of this writing, Actraiser Renaissance is available now on the Switch eShop.
Deltarune Chapter Two
Toby Fox's recent release of Deltarune Chapter Two is now available on the Nintendo Switch alongside the game's first chapter. Those who have already downloaded Deltarune's first chapter can get the second as a free update.
Splatoon 3
After a long period of silence, more footage and information has been released regarding Splatoon 3. One of the biggest reveals is the return of mammals, outside of Judd and Li'l Judd, to the world of Splatoon. This will be what the main single-player campaign focuses on.
The new setting of Splatoon 3 will be a city named Splatsville, a place known for chaos. This is likely a reflection of Splatoon 2's final Splatfest, which resulted in Pearl and Team Chaos winning over Marina and Team Order. Strangely, neither members of Off the Hook can be seen in the Direct's trailer, but both Squid Sisters are still present. DJ Octavio also seems to play a role in the plot, being seen piloting a robot at one point. At this time, the release window of Splatoon 3 is set for 2022.
Bayonetta 3
To the delight of many, Bayonetta 3 was the final trailer shown during this Nintendo Direct. The Umbra Witch is back with a new outfit and hairstyle, but the same stylish moves to take down any foe. Bayonetta is shown fighting a beast in Japan, using her time manipulation abilities to take it down.
Gameplay footage shows Bayonetta fighting along the streets, inside subway cars, and sliding down the sides of skyscapers. There is likely plenty more yet to be shown, but fans no longer have to speculate about the Bayonetta 3's existance after the Nintendo Direct. The currently estimated release date for this title is sometime in 2022.
