Now that summer is drawing to a close, we're getting into the busiest period of the year when it comes to new video game releases. Nintendo has pledged to update fans on what's next for the Switch and the 3DS in a Direct broadcast scheduled for 6PM EST on September 13 — and Super Mario Odyssey is set to be a big focus.

Super Mario Odyssey is undoubtedly the jewel in the crown of Nintendo's late 2017 software line-up, so it's unsurprising to see the game take center stage. However, after the enormous amounts of praise that the title amassed at E3 2017, Switch owners will certainly be eager to see a little more of what's in store.

We already know that Super Mario Odyssey is set to launch on October 27, so this will likely mark the beginning of the final promotional push that Nintendo will offer up ahead of release. If the game lives up to its considerable hype, the Switch will have received top-tier titles in the company's two biggest franchises, following the universal acclaim for The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild that accompanied the system's launch.

Of course, it's unlikely that the broadcast will solely be focused on Super Mario Odyssey. A tweet from Nintendo of Europe revealed that the stream will last for 45 minutes, which suggests that the company has plenty of news and footage from upcoming releases to share with fans.

Metroid: Samus Returns launches this week, so we can perhaps expect that title to get some time in the spotlight. Going on previous Nintendo Direct broadcasts, we're liable to see some brand new, unannounced games make their debut, too.

Nintendo has unleashed many of its biggest franchises on the Switch very early in the console's lifespan, so it's entirely possible that we might see some of its second tier of characters brought to the fore as the system approaches its first anniversary. Could Donkey Kong make a return? Will the world of Animal Crossing be given another outing? Might we hear a little more about Metroid Prime 4? We'll have to wait until Wednesday to find out.

This week's Nintendo Direct gets underway at 6PM EST on September 13, and will be streamed via the company's official website.
