Rumors have persisted about Nintendo hosting a Nintendo Direct presentation this month, and now those rumors have been confirmed. However, instead of Nintendo hosting a general Nintendo Direct focused on various upcoming Switch titles like many fans expected, the January 2020 Nintendo Direct will be focused on the Pokemon franchise.

The Pokemon Direct will take place on Thursday, January 9 at 6:30am PT/9:30am ET. Details on what exactly the Direct will entail are scarce, but Nintendo has said it will include about 20 minutes of "new Pokemon information." As for what Pokemon games or products it will be about specifically, that's hard to say at this point.

The upcoming Pokemon Direct is surprising since Pokemon Sword and Shield just launched this past November. However, there are a number of previously announced Pokemon projects that it could be about. For example, fans may be treated to more information about the Pokemon Home service, or maybe we'll get an update on Pokemon Sleep. Alternatively, the Pokemon Direct could reveal a new Pokemon mobile game that's in the works.

It's also possible that the upcoming Pokemon Direct will instead announce new content for existing Pokemon games. For example, we may get new content announced for the Pokemon Masters mobile game, or maybe Nintendo will reveal an expansion for Pokemon Sword and Shield. Nintendo and Game Freak have never released substantial DLC for any of the main series Pokemon games, but that could change with Sword and Shield on the Switch.

If Pokemon Sword and Shield did get an expansion, one has to wonder what exactly that would entail. Maybe it would address the National Pokedex controversy, or maybe it would give fans a brand new area to explore. It's also possible that the Pokemon Direct will be used to announce the Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon equivalent for Sword and Shield. The possibilities are really endless.

Twitter, meanwhile, has its own theories about the Pokemon Direct presentation. Right now, both Gen 4 and Diamond and Pearl are trending, indicating that some fans think remakes of those games are on the way. It seems a little early for Nintendo to announce brand new main series Pokemon games, but fans will just have to tune in to the Pokemon Direct on Thursday, January 9 at 6:30am PT to find out more.
