Nintendo hasn't hosted a Nintendo Direct presentation since the Nintendo Direct Mini: Partner Showcase in October, which focused primarily on third-party games in development for the Switch. While there have been presentations from the company since then, there's been nothing on the level of a Nintendo Direct. Luckily, there is some evidence to suggest that the first Nintendo Direct presentation of 2021 could be happening sooner rather than later.

The official Nintendo Direct website archive has been updated yet again, for the second time in January. The website was originally updated on January 4, and has received another update on January 8. In the past, this has sometimes been an indication that a Nintendo Direct presentation is coming soon, with the belief being that the website update is in preparation for the addition of a new video. However, Nintendo fans shouldn't get their hopes up, as it's possible the update has nothing to do with a new Nintendo Direct.

That being said, it would make sense for a new Nintendo Direct to happen soon. Nintendo has consistently hosted a Nintendo Direct presentation of some description in the new year, often giving fans updates on games they can expect to see that following spring. With virtually no Nintendo-published games with release dates on the calendar, it wouldn't make sense for Nintendo to break from that tradition now.

As it stands, one of the only Nintendo-published games that currently has a release date for Switch is Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury, set to launch in early February. Fans are mostly clueless as to what they can expect to see from the Big N for the rest of the year, and so it seems the company would want to rectify that sooner rather than later. But if Nintendo does host a Nintendo Direct in January or February 2021 as rumored, it remains to be seen what exactly it will entail.

It's possible that the first Nintendo Direct of 2021 will be another Partner Showcase, or may be a proper, full-fledged Nintendo Direct presentation. It's also possible it will be used to reveal the long-rumored Nintendo Switch Pro console, which is believed to be coming out at some point this year. Whatever form the Nintendo Direct takes, fans will likely be happy to have one to look forward to at all.

If a Nintendo Direct is coming in January 2021, it's possible fans won't get any kind of heads up from Nintendo. Nintendo sometimes surprise-launches Nintendo Direct presentations with no prior announcements, so fans should keep an eye out.
