Since 2011, Nintendo has hosted Nintendo Direct presentations as a way to make game announcements throughout the year instead of just revealing everything at its E3 presentation in June. The most recent Nintendo Direct (not counting game-specific Directs) took place this past September, and since Nintendo usually hosts one in the winter, fans are expecting the next Direct to take place sooner rather than later. And now there's evidence that the next Nintendo Direct may even take place as soon as this month.

GameStop has listed a number of unnamed SKUs for its upcoming software releases, which typically happens right before a Nintendo Direct airs. Of course, it's possible that this is just a coincidence or a computer error, but history has shown that this does usually point to a Nintendo Direct happening soon. As previously mentioned, Nintendo does usually host a Nintendo Direct in the winter, though it typically takes place in February instead of January.

That's not to say that there haven't been Nintendo Direct presentations in January, however. Some special Nintendo Direct presentations have taken place in January, like the Switch reveal Direct a few years ago, but the last regular Direct to take place in January was all the way back in 2015. Considering this, some may think that a Nintendo Direct in January seems unlikely. Really anything is possible, so fans will just have to wait for an official announcement from Nintendo to be sure.

As for what Nintendo may present during its upcoming Nintendo Direct presentation, that remains to be seen. New game announcements could be just about anything, so guessing is pointless. However, there are some already-revealed Nintendo games that seem like surefire bets for the first Nintendo Direct of 2020.

It seems likely that Nintendo would showcase Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE Encore during its January Nintendo Direct, especially since the game is supposed to launch later this month. Another likely game for the rumored January Nintendo Direct is Animal Crossing: New Horizons, which is set to launch in March.

Yet another strong possibility for the next Nintendo Direct is confirmation of the next Super Smash Bros. Ultimate DLC character. Many expected Super Smash Bros. Ultimate DLC 5 to be released in December, but since that didn't come to pass, perhaps the character will launch in January or February. That's just speculation at this time, but here's hoping Nintendo fans don't have to wait much longer to find out.
