Ninja Theory, Ltd., the developer of PlayStation 3 exclusive, Heavenly Sword, has released the first trailer for its newest creation, Enslaved: Odyssey to the West. Unlike Heavenly Sword, this new property will be published by Namco Bandai and released both on the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.

For the uninitiated, Enslaved is loosely based upon the 18th Century novel, Journey to the West.

In this version, the setting is 150 years into the future and the world has been devastated by war and ecological disasters. Very few human survivors remain, which results in an unusual pairing:

In ENSLAVEDâ„¢: Odyssey to the Westâ„¢, players take on the role of Monkey, a strong and athletic, yet solitary figure, who been captured by one of the mysterious slave ships, which harvest the remaining population and take them out west never to return. Trip, a technologically savvy young woman who has also been imprisoned by the same ship, manages to escape. She quickly realizes that Monkey, with his raw strength and power, is her only hope to survive the perilous journey back to her home. She hacks into a slave headband and fits it on Monkey, linking them together — if she dies, he dies… Her journey has now become his and Monkey must now travel west alongside Trip as they traverse a demolished world, under constant threat of capture and mortal peril.

Interestingly, actor Andy Serkis, who is best known for playing Gollum in The Lord of the Rings, will direct and perform the motion-capture for the character of Monkey. Fans of screenwriter Alex Garland, who wrote the script for 28 Days Later and cult-favorite Sunshine, should also be intrigued as Garland is co-writing the script for the game.

The video appears to show that co-op play will dominate the gameplay ala the last Prince of Persia title. Check out the video and let us know what you think!
