Popular Fortnite streamer Tyler Blevins, better known by his username Ninja, has been added to the game as a skin by developer Epic Games. Available for purchase January 16th through 19th for an unknown price, the skin will allow players to shoot their way through the world of Fortnite while bearing the appearance of the streamer himself.

The skin features Ninja's now iconic spiky, cyan hair, in addition to his general blue color scheme and his logo proudly brandished across the skin's sleeve. Also coming to Fortnite, along with the four different variations to the Ninja skin, is a dual katana back bling, an accompanying dual katana pickax, and a Ninja themed dance emote.

This is just the latest in a long string of corporate crossovers for Ninja. After his very public deal to switch from streaming platform Twitch to Microsoft's platform Mixer, he released a book titled Get Good: My Ultimate Guide to Gaming, his very own comic book series starring himself, and most recently a shoe partnership with Adidas. His expansive brand also includes figurines, notebooks, headbands, pillows, shirts, and hats.

ninja gets fortnite skin

Ninja isn't the first real life public figure to be turned into an in-game skin, as Fortnite previously gave that treatment to music artists Marshmello and Major Lazer. However Ninja will be the first in a line of celebrity additions to the game, which Epic Games is calling the "Icon Series." Gamers Loserfruit and TheGrefg have already been confirmed to be appearing in the game at a later date.

Epic's choice to add famous icons to Fortnite has the potential to be greatly lucrative, but with it comes the added risk of attaching its brand to very real people, like Ninja, (who already has a dedicated section to controversies on his Wikipedia page,) and in particular, to online streamers, who can easily tarnish their image with only a few wrong words, since they're constantly live. Added to this is the expectation that players will be able to permanently keep their purchased in-game items, a factor that would make removal of any item difficult, should Epic Games ever choose to disassociate with any of their selected public figures.

Whether this is a smart business strategy for Epic in the long term remains to be seen, as January 16th rolls around, and as Epic releases and announces more crossovers.
