In April 2010, the action role-playing video game NieR came out on PS3 and Xbox 360 in April 2010. It was developed by Cavia and published by Square Enix. Then the game was released as NieR Replicant (featuring a younger main character) on PS3 but only in Japan while an alternative version NieR Gestalt was dropped elsewhere on the Xbox 360.

Fast forward to April 23, 2021; NieR Replicant ver.1.22474487139... came out on the PS4, Xbox One, and PC, featuring an updated, complete version of the original game! Kainé is one of the main characters in the story of this game. She is a companion of NieR who is possessed by a Gestalt called Tyrann. Kainé appears cold and cruel yet shy and collected.

8 She Was Born In The Aerie

Kainé was born in The Aerie. Because she was intersex, the townspeople ostracized her and even went as far as considered Kainé's entire existence a bad omen.

The Aerie an actual location in NieR RepliCant (as well as NieR Gestalt). It is where the player is introduced to her for the first time. In fact, they must fight Kainé upon this first encounter.

7 She's A Lone Wolf

Nier Kaine Kick

Kainé is only half-human. Both her left arm and left leg fell victim to a Shade, now covered up in bandages. Because of her appearance, she was always an outcast, even when Kainé was just a child.

Therefore, she got used to always being alone and developed into an extremely shy person as a result. Kainé learned to survive all on her own too. Aside from being a shy loner, she has random outbursts and sudden fits of anger that turn violent.

6 She Loves Her Grandma

Nier Kaine Looking Down

Following her parents' deaths, Kainé was raised by her grandmother, Kali. (In NieR RepliCant, she is known as Curly.) While everyone around Kainé shunned her and was outright mean to Kainé, Kali was kind and offered protection always.

Unfortunately, after an encounter with Hook (the Shade), Kali died. Hook attacked their house, pinning down Kali and laughing until her very last breath. This was how Kainé got mutilated too. She loved her grandmother and respected her greatly, especially since she treated Kainé like an actual woman and accepted her for who she is.

5 Kainé’s Swords Are Unique

"She was slender, with smooth, white skin. The hint of a dark shadow in her expression highlighted her beautiful features. But something about the sword in her hand didn't seem to fit the picture."

Kainé’s Sword in the game actually features two blades, both filled with loss and muddled identities. She would swing them with anger, hatred, and sadness as if they had a total lust for blood. Eaten alive by loneliness, Kainé’ resorted to violence since she thought no one understood her anyway. Kainé eventually was devoured by the darkness inside her, but her heart remained with the one she loved in life and after death.

4 She Never Directly Kills Antagonists Or Bosses

Despite being a deadly swordsman that loves violence, Kainé actually did not directly kill any of the main antagonists in the game nor a single boss.

Nier is always the one to deliver the final blow. And if not, it still was not her. When it came to Grimoire Noir, that was Weiss. (Grimoire Noir was the Shadowlord's cloned magical tome that cast spells.) With Wendy, that was Emil. (Wendy was the huge Shade that looked like a giant stone/flower with an eye.)

3 She Loves Tongue Twisters

One of Kainé's talents (and there are dozens) is tongue twisters. She fires off plenty through the story of the game. Kainé loves cursing and swearing during going through them too.

Where did she get this attitude? Well, her not-so-sweet grandmother Kali, of course. Kali had quite the mouth on her, and just as foul an attitude. Naturally, Kainé inherited both!

2 She Has Appeared In Other Games

Besides NieR RepliCant, which originally only came out in Japan on the PS3, Kainé appeared in NieR, which released in Japan and North America in 2010. She also was mentioned (and only just mentioned) in NieR:Automata, which dropped on the PS4 in Japan, North America, and Europe in 2017.

Beyond the NieR franchise, Kainé appeared in Lord of Vermillion Re:2, a card strategy game. There are characters that join her from Final Fantasy IX, BlazBlueThe King of FightersPersona 3, and Persona 4.

1 Her Voice Actor Is Laura Bailey

For those that may think Kainé's voice sounds familiar, it's likely because it is! Laura Bailey voices Kainé in the game. She's famous for voicing countless characters in video games including Blaze the Cat, Lucina, Abby Anderson, and Jaina Proudmoore. She's also voiced several famous anime characters including Kid Trunks, Tohru Honda, and Maka Albarn.
