Square Enix’s Nier series will have plenty to look forward to in the coming months, thanks to the remake of the original game, Nier Replicant ver.1.22474487139, and the incoming mobile title Nier Reincarnation. But it turns out that it has a lot to enjoy in the present too, thanks to the immense success of its previous entry, the Platinum Games hack-and-slash action-RPG Nier: Automata.

2020 marks the tenth anniversary of the series’ inception, and today saw Square Enix celebrate it with a special Christmas-themed livestream that coincided with a number of announcements and reveals. Amid these, it was announced that Nier: Automata has surpassed 5 million copies sold worldwide both physically and digitally.

Aside from cementing Automata’s status as Platinum’s best-selling game, this milestone goes to show just how popular it has remained since it first launched on PC and PS4 in 2017. While the game was already starting to sell well then, it has since been bolstered by an Xbox One release in 2018 and a “Game of the YoRHa” edition the following year. Helping it further is how Square has kept it in the public consciousness through crossovers in games like Final Fantasy 14 and SoulCalibur 6.

As one of the most critically-acclaimed action games of recent years, it’s no shock that Automata has become so successful. Whether the upcoming Nier titles will prove successes in their own right, though, remains to be seen. Fortunately, fans won’t have to wait long to find out, since Nier Reincarnation is launching on February 18, according to today’s announcements, and Nier Replicant ver.1.22474487139 is slated to follow on April 23.

Nier: Automata is available for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
