NieR: Automata documents the harrowing story of a group of androids in a post-apocalyptic world. Set in a barren wasteland, 2B and 9S must navigate this frighteningly quiet land to vanquish the mechanical life forms that plague it. New areas will be unlocked upon completing a chapter of the game's story, but finding them is not always an easy task.

Once the player has bested the NieR: Automata's 2D-styled platforming segment in the Forest Zone, their next objective requires them to venture to the Flooded City. This task marks the first instance of the game letting go of the player's hand, as they are only given a rough idea of how to get there.

Finding The Entrance To The Flooded City

The Stream to the Right in NieR Automata

Travel to the Resistance Camp via the vending machine and leave the premises on foot. Upon reaching the pond at the Base's entrance, follow the offshoot stream that flows to the right between two large buildings. The stream will split, so ignore the path to the right for now and continue following the water to the left.

The path will end, forcing the stream to become a waterfall. Check the map to ensure 2B is above the entrance's waypoint and jump down to where the water crashes on a nearby ledge. The map will suggest the player has reached their destination, but there is still some platforming to be done to truly get there.

Scale The Side Of The Crater's Cliff

Step away from the waterfall and look back towards the side of the cliff. Carefully turn right and examine the floor below to witness a collection of other waterfalls and debris. Look for the orange-glowing collectible and leap toward it. 2B will now be on the same level as the entrance to the Flooded City.

Turn left and take a few steps to discover a circular opening leading into the side of the cliff. Here, 2B can enter a series of tunnels that, if approached correctly, will result in the uncovering of the Flooded City. The player can also opt to walk to this opening from the bottom of the Crater, but this method will take more time and will pose greater difficulty due to the enemies in the way.

Keep an eye on the map to ensure 2B is going in the right direction, but don't forget to explore for collectibles. There will be several opportunities to pick up some nice items in these tunnels. This area has a chance to spawn a collection of rare items necessary for upgrading some of the game's more powerful weapons. Make sure to keep an eye out for Silver Ore, Gold Ore, Moldavite, Pyrite, Pure Water, Pearls, Black Pearls, and Tanning Agents in both the tunnel and throughout the Flooded City as some of them cannot be found anywhere else.

To get to the Flooded City, enter the first tunnel and take a left. Continue towards the wall and turn right to find a path that stretches forward. Run along this descending path and take the first right to find a chest containing a Medium-Recovery. Return to the long corridor and continue down the path to the next left turn. Kick open the chest here to obtain a Small G Luck+ before continuing down the sewage slide 2B was once on. At the end of this tunnel, take a right and follow the path to uncover the entrance to the Flooded City.

Arriving In The Flooded City

Fishing in the Flooded City in NieR Automata

Before venturing any further, it is recommended to make use of the vending machine to the right of the tunnel's exit. Doing so will negate the need to travel back to this water-filled wasteland on foot. Defeat the machines surrounding the vending machine to unlock it as a save point and a means of fast travel. After saving the game, continue along the path for a much-deserved cutscene that documents the areas the player can now explore.

Be prepared to utilize the Pod to glide to different areas and attack otherwise unreachable enemies. Follow the path, jumping to and from the submerged building's rooftops to reach an open area sprawling with machines. Avoid these enemies for now and turn left. Go to the end of the destroyed freeway to partake in the fishing mini-game wherein 2B can salvage an array of useful items. Fishing in this particular location gives the player the chance to salvage Pod B, the most powerful Pod in the game. Defeat the enemies that 2B passed earlier to unlock the next part of the story.

NieR: Automata is available to play on PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
