Nier: Automata is a decent size in terms of the explorable world. There are the City Ruins, Desert Zone, Amusement Park, Abandoned Factory, and Forest Zone as well as various settlements such as the Machine Village and Resistance Camp. The game has many side quests that can send the player from one end of the map to the other, and walking would make the game take much longer.

For players that do not feel like walking from one zone to the next, there is fast travel. However, is it not available by default like in some other games. Players must unlock the ability. On the bright side, actually fast traveling does not cost anything and is simple to use once it is unlocked.

How To Unlock Fast Travel

2B talking to NPC.

Unlocking fast travel requires playing through Chapter Five of the game. It should come up organically by following the game's main story. By following the main story, the player should end up in an underground city and fight a boss there. After defeating the boss, exit the area, and this time there will be an NPC named Jackass by the entrance. She will offer a transporter component to 2B.

After talking to her and taking the transporter component, fast travel will be unlocked. Fast travel does have its limits, though. The player can only fast travel via Access Points. At first, there will only be options to go between the Bunker and Resistance Camp, but players can find other Access Points and interact with them to make them available.

How To Use Fast Travel

9S by access point.

There are Access Points all around Nier: Automata. In total, there are 18 of them with usually more than one found in big areas. For example, the Factory has three Access Points and the Desert Zone has four. To use an Access Point, interact with it and select Transport. From there, a menu will pop up of locations. Once a location is selected, it will show the available Access Points there.

Remember that the only Access Points that will appear under Transport are ones that have been visited before. This means fast travel only allowed the player to go to places they've already been. This is still very useful for future side quests and especially useful for players seeking to platinum the game and find all the weapons.
