Square Enix and Platinum Games’ NieR: Automata gets new videos, showcasing exactly what fans of the original action RPG title can expect from this follow-up.

Fans of the original NieR have always felt that the game was unfairly overlooked, and that 2010’s action RPG is one of the hidden gems of the last console generation. When another game in the franchise in the form of NieR: Automata was revealed at E3 2015, many were excited about what the title would bring when it saw release. Now, publisher Square Enix and developer Platinum Games have perhaps revealed what the sequel may have in store, through videos released in the wake of a new NieR event that took place on April 16.

The first set of the NieR: Automata videos will no doubt prove incredibly interesting to fans of the original. Revolving around the game’s combat, they first show a pair of characters walking around the post-apocalyptic game world, before then taking on enemies in the game’s action-oriented combat system. It certainly looks as though the game’s action has a more dynamic feel than the original, perhaps in keeping with Platinum Games’ development history.

The second video, meanwhile, gives a glimpse at the game’s protagonist, an android named 2B. Square Enix had previously revealed the character, but this is perhaps the most in-depth look those excited about the title have received so far. There’s one catch, however – the video is in Japanese, so those who don’t speak the language might not get much out of it, aside from a look at the character’s design. Those interested can catch the video on YouTube, courtesy of user xenosaga7. The first part of the gameplay video, meanwhile, is embedded below.

NieR: Automata was revealed by Square Enix back at E3 2015, alongside the announcement that Bayonetta developer Platinum Games would be tasked with delivering some oomph to the game. Revolving around a future world where humanity has been forced to flee to the Moon after a sudden attack from alien beings and mechanical life forms, NieR: Automata tasks the player with restoring order to the world, taking on the role of one of these android warriors. It certainly sounds like the kind of high-octane action that Platinum Games is renowned for.

The title also looks to have close ties to the original game, taking place after the events of the first NieR. Although Square Enix has previously stated that it works well as a stand alone title, it will be interesting to see exactly how well NieR: Automata functions as a solo game. Nonetheless, with Platinum Games on board and making the game its own, it’s bound to be a thrilling ride.

It remains to be seen whether the title can have a larger influence on the gaming community as a whole, however. Although the original NieR, which itself was a spin-off of the Drakengard series, was fairly well received by players if not critics, Square Enix will no doubt have been disappointed to see the lack of mark that it left as a whole upon its release. Let’s see whether this new game delivers on its promise.

NieR: Automata is due to be released for PS4 at some point in 2016.
