Square Enix announces that Platinum Games' NieR: Automata is going to be delayed, releasing a new trailer for the game confirming a launch in early 2017.

Square Enix is a publisher with a lot on its plate at the moment. The upcoming JRPG Final Fantasy XV is being readied for its release at the end of September, while the title is also going to be on the receiving end of a first-person VR experience created exclusively for PlayStation VR. Unfortunately, not every game in the company's roster is developing quite as well, and it turns out that NieR: Automata is going to be facing a delay.

The news was revealed by Square Enix today, although the publisher did not explain exactly why the Platinum Games-developed title was having its release date pushed back. Previously, rumors had begun to circulate over a delay to NieR: Automata after the game was mysteriously not mentioned by Square Enix in a list of upcoming releases during an earnings presentation in May. Now, those murmurings have proved to be accurate.

At the moment, the delay has not resulted in a finite release date for the title. Instead, the previous previsional release date of some point in 2016 has been replaced by one for early 2017. Hopefully, however, Square Enix will be able to give a full release date at some point soon. Until then, the publisher has released a brand new trailer for the game, to coincide with E3 2016. Check it out below.

This new trailer shows off a little more of the game's varied environments, as the protagonists fight against a wealth of different robotic enemies. The title certainly seems to have the unique and memorable character designs that Platinum Games is known for, and the story - which focuses on a future world where the human race has had to escape the planet after an attack from aliens and mechanical life forms - seems quirky enough to keep players interested.

NieR: Automata was originally revealed in 2015, and was subject to an intriguing trailer at E3 2015 before the title even had an official name. Since then, fans of the original NieR have been teased with debut gameplay trailers and even a more in-depth look at the game in action courtesy of new gameplay footage from official NieR events.

Unfortunately, those awaiting the game's release in 2016 are now going to have to wait a little while longer. Hopefully, Square Enix or Platinum Games will be able to give a better indication of when players can expect the game soon, and that the extra time in development leads to an even better end product for players.

NieR: Automata will be released in early 2017, exclusively for the PS4.
