Fred Seibert of Frederation Studios, known for Adventure Time, confirms that a longstanding video games series is about to be made into a cartoon show by Nickelodeon.

Be it the recent Netflix-exclusive Skylanders series, the animated Sonic Boom show, or even the upcoming Mega Man cartoon, there are several examples of ongoing initiatives to get gaming franchises in front of new audiences. While that’s certainly an important initiative for a number of developers, some companies have become much more close-guarded of their properties in the wake of a gaming cartoon blitz in the 80’s – providing fans of various gaming series with little to look forward to on Saturday mornings.

While this mentality will remain steadfast for some time, it appears that a longstanding gaming franchise is about to be made a reality through Nickelodeon. Speaking on the Nick Animation Podcast, Fred Seibert of Frederation Studios (known for The Fairly Odd Parents and Adventure Time) confirmed that a gaming-related project that the team has been sitting on for 12 years is finally underway. Those curious can check out the comment for themselves below.

“We have a project now that we’re doing that needs to go unnamed, based on one of the most world famous video games of the last 30 years, that we’ve had in our shop for twelve years without being able to get it started. But there were great characters and a great story, and eventually we got it going.”

Speculation at this point seems to be directed at Nintendo being the IP holder that’s green-lit a show based on one of its many properties. If true, this could be anything from a revamped Super Mario Bros. Super Show to another crack at The Legend of Zelda – presumably sans the obnoxious and notorious “excuse me, princess” line – but this is all just speculation. With that said, given Nintendo’s recent initiative to start partnering with companies for film and television, it does make a lot of sense.

As Seibert stated, the project “needs to go unnamed” for the time being, but gaming aficionados will certainly be eager to see what Frederation Studios has up its sleeve. Whether or not it’s a Nintendo cartoon is an interesting prospect, but with previous reports pointing to Netflix setting up a Legend of Zelda live-action series (which, sadly, never ended up coming to fruition) it’s possible that the series has found a new home on Nickelodeon.

It’s interesting to speculate on the matter, so feel free to chime in with thoughts on Nickelodeon’s perspective take on a gaming cartoon below.
