The longstanding popularity of the Super Smash Bros. series has produced numerous copycat games which sought to emulate Nintendo's success. Some have certainly been more successful than others, but there's now a new contender that has the potential to provide a truly unique fighting game experience. Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl is taking some classic characters from Nickelodeon's long history and pitting them against one another in a colorful and crazy fighting game that already looks like a promising Super Smash Bros. clone.

The reveal for Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl showcased a lot of what players can expect from the game when it comes out later this fall. The explosive combat that's to be expected from a Smash Bros.-style game is all there, and a handful of maps have been shown that highlight various Nickelodeon properties. The centerpiece of the game's trailer, however, was its revealed characters. While some properties were given more representation than others, there were some pleasant surprises and deep cuts for longstanding Nickelodeon fans.

Living In The Shadow Of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate

nickelodeon all star brawl roster release date

While Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl's confirmed roster list seems like a nice homage to the cartoon producer, the game will face some challenges considering its comparisons to Super Smash Bros. One of the biggest potential issues could come from the roster's size. Ever since Super Smash Bros. Ultimate brought party-fighting game rosters close to the triple digits, some gamers have come to expect a wealth of options for who they can play as. While Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl does have some surprising features that Ultimate doesn't, some gamers might get tired of a paltry roster sooner rather than later.

The Potential Of Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl's Roster

Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl's confirmed list of characters is certainly something to get excited about, but there's also potential for so many other characters to make an appearance. The game has over twenty years of Nickelodeon history to draw on, and there are dozens of Nickelodeon characters that could still show up. Some fans are already pointing out some surprising omissions from the first trailer, such as Timmy Turner from Fairly OddParents, and Jenny Wakeman from My Life as a Teenage Robot. While it's entirely possible that more characters like these could be revealed in the future, it would be a shame if that potential wasn't fully realized.

It's a rare thing when a cartoon-based video game gets as much buzz as Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl has thus far. While they can often be seen as mediocre tie-ins similar to the comic book film tie-ins from years ago, Nickelodeon has shown a surprising amount of consistency with the quality of its games. Developers Ludosity and Fair Play Lab already look like they've done a great job at recreating some of Nickelodeon's most beloved characters, so now it will just be a matter of sticking the landing with the game's release.

Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl releases this fall for PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S.
