Fire Emblem has always been a relatively big franchise, but never really had mainstream popularity in the West. However, Fire Emblem: Three Houses is now the second game in the franchise to find a major audience - one that rests outside of those that have been playing since the franchise’s inception. It’s a brilliant game. The connections made with other characters are incredible, role-playing as a teacher is an itch that many never knew they had, and the story is incredibly engaging. The next Harry Potter game should take notes - even as bizarre as that sounds.

The connection between Hogwarts and The Officer’s Academy should be clear enough, both feature a variety of houses, train students with supernatural abilities, and are generally whimsical. Three Houses in itself could be a Harry Potter game with relatively few changes. Really, it would just be subbing warriors for witches and wizards, which it already includes to a lesser extent. But, it goes a little deeper than that. Three Houses, in a way, has already portrayed Hogwarts better than any other game has, even if the school isn’t called Hogwarts.

This doesn’t necessarily mean that Warner Bros. should release a turn-based strategy game featuring famous wizards, but they should at least look at what Fire Emblem: Three Houses has succeeded at, and there’s quite a bit that they should be able to draw inspiration from for whatever Harry Potter game that leaked footage from last year winds up becoming.

As much fun as being a professor at Hogwarts sounds, that probably wouldn’t be the right spot to kick off a Harry Potter game at. For most people, attending Hogwarts as a student is the biggest part of the fantasy a hypothetical game would need to fulfill. That being said, picking a house would be rather different than in Fire Emblem, and, as most probably can guess, be based around the Sorting Hat.

The house a player gets sorted into could affect their base stats, which would help determine what they’re good at later on, or at least steer them in one direction. Gryffindors could get bonuses to a stat like bravery, which would eventually help them turn into an Auror, Ravenclaws could get bonuses to wit, helping them write books, Slytherin could get cunning, which could help make potions, and Hufflepuffs could overcome their lactose intolerance through sheer determination. Like in Fire Emblem, a student could shift their study focus throughout their years at Hogwarts, preparing them for whatever career they choose to pursue later on.

Day to day, students would have to attend classes, partake in events, forge bonds with their classmates, and explore Hogwarts - much like in Three Houses. All of this would help prepare students for the OWLs, and eventually determine whether or not they graduate and have a succesful career. Fail to do so, and the player would be cursed to live out their days as a groundskeeper.

And, of course, there could be a time skip. Depending on the player’s stats, choices, relationships, and overall success at Hogwarts, they could find their way into a career as the Wizarding World slowly descends into chaos over a Dark Wizard or some other supernatural threat rises. Players could become Aurors, Alchemists, Writers, or any other careers they so choose as they come together with their allies to stop, or assist, the new threat. A cunning Slytherin with strong relationships could convince a noble Gryffindor to become a Dark Wizard and vice versa.

Two key aspects of the Fire Emblem franchise are its difficulty and permadeath, which should be an ever-present threat in the Harry Potter universe as well. Some of Harry Potter’s best moments are when beloved characters die, and that’s something that should be maintained within a game too. Early on, an accident at Hogwarts could lead to a student’s death, and as players get older, the threat of a dark wizard or some grave error could lead to a character biting the dust.

The list of potential features and similarities could go on forever, and of course, there would be plenty of room for Warner Bros. to experiment around. But the thought of a Harry Potter game with a Hogwarts as cool as The Officer's Academy is an exciting concept, and there's so much more that could potentially make a theoretical game even better. That being said, one can only dream. Harry Potter fans have never had much luck with games, besides a few standouts, and it's still up in the air whether or not that will change any time soon. Everyone will just have to settle with Hogwarts Mystery for the time being.
