Given the continued success of Pokemon Go, and the seemingly undying love fans have for the original Game Boy and Nintendo DS Pokemon games, it's no wonder that developers and publishers are still creating games that try to recreate the monster catching and evolving formula. Nexomon: Extinction, which is currently doing a good job of generating interest from fans of Game Freak's long-running series, has revealed new information about the regions and Nexomon that will be available in the upcoming game.
The first area revealed for Nexomon: Extinction is called New Ignitia, The Fire Region, an underground volcanic city in which gamers may encounter the rare cat-like Nexomon called Nekpanchi, with surprisingly powerful puffy paws. The second area is called Solus, The Desert Region, an area rich in gemstones and mineral-like Nexomon such as Rust, who uses a steel helmet for attack and defense. The third area is called Frozen Tundra, The Ice Region, which is home to water-type Nexomon like Cruff, who are skillful at stealing items.
Each of the Nexomon can be evolved, as would be expected in a Pokemon-like game, and as gamers tame them some will become "very loyal and noble." Players will also be able to obtain weapons such as pickaxes, that will help them mine for gemstones and "elemental shards," which are likely to play a role in either buying items or evolving Nexomon.
Nexomon: Extinction is a sequel to the well-liked Mac, PC, and mobile game Nexomon. The user reviews for the original are very positive, barring some glitches that seemed to impact the Android version. This should reassure gamers who are looking for more Pokemon style action that developers VEWO Interactive are certainly capable of producing a quality title, even though it isn't a developer than most will have heard of. Publishing will be handled by PQube, known for publishing titles such as BlazBlue, Guilty Gear, and Cat Quest.
The reveals of a fire region, a desert region, and an ice region are hardly groundbreaking in terms of inventiveness, but they do at least show that VEWO Interactive is working towards bringing a varied and in-depth Pokemon style game to players. Given the number of terrible knock-offs and badly thought out clone experiences that can overwhelm digital stores, it is positive to see that Nexomon: Extinction appears to be driven by a love of the Pokemon series, rather than making a quick buck.
However, Pokemon fans won't know for sure how Nexomon: Extinction stacks up against the original series, or the recently released Pokemon-like MMO game Temtem, until it releases later in the year.
Nexomon: Extinction is due to release on Nintendo Switch, PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One in Summer 2020.
