New 3DS Zelda, Nintendo Considering Majora's Mask Remake

The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword and its golden Wii remote will be on store shelves in a matter of weeks, capping one of the best years for the franchise ever. In honor of The Legend of Zelda's 25th Anniversary, Nintendo rewarded fans with a free copy of The Legend of Zelda: Four Swords and staged a series of live concerts. But the celebration really kicked off last June with the release of the 3DS's defining game, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D.

In a new interview, Legend of Zelda producer Eiji Aonuma discusses what's next for the series, and 3DS owners are going to like what he has to say.

The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D received universally glowing reviews, and quickly sold a million copies. Naturally, fans would love to see the series return to Nintendo's handheld, and from the day Ocarina of Time 3D released, those very same fans have harbored hope that Link's second N64 adventure, The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask, would be next in line.

Aonuma is well aware of the demand for a Majora's Mask remake, and doesn't rule out the posibility.

“It’s something I’m asked about often and I assure you that it is something I’ve spoken to Miyamoto about. But recently we released The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D as a remake. We are considering the idea, but it didn’t seem right to launch a remake one after another, so the next Zelda game on 3DS will be original.”

An original, built from the ground up Legend of Zelda for 3DS certainly sounds intriguing. Given what Aonuma and his team achieved with the series' DS incarnations, Phantom Hourglass and Spirit Tracks, it's easy to be excited about the possibilities presented by the 3DS. But with Nintendo's Wii U set to launch sometime next year, and Miyamoto's conformation that a Legend of Zelda title will be coming to the system, how soon can we expect development of an all new Zelda title for 3DS begin?

“We are already preparing a new game, a game in the series for the Nintendo 3DS, but don’t think that it is a direct sequel to the Zelda titles released on DS. We are talking about a new game, but it takes much of what has been done on previous handhelds.”

Time to start the speculation engine, Ranters. If Legend of Zelda 3DS isn't a direct sequel to the DS games, could it be tied to another Zelda adventure? Which would you pick? Should the new game use the art-style from Ocarina of Time 3D, or a completely new approach? What about stylus control? Circle Pad Pro? There are a million possibilities -- let us know what you want in the comments below.

The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword releases November 20, 2011, for the Wii.
