New York Game Awards Reveals Its List of Nominees

Preparations for the 10th anniversary of the annual New York Game Awards is underway as the list of nominees was announced yesterday. Presented by the New York Videogame Critics Circle and co-hosted by former president and COO of Nintendo of America Reggie Fils-Aimé, the video game awards ceremony will play out a bit differently this year. In previous years, such an event would be met with anticipation from fans and the gaming industry alike, all of whom would attend these ceremonies in person.

However, due to the landscape that the year 2020 has left the world, in terms of social distancing and other safety protocol, it is expected that the "online-only" approach will continue well into 2021. The concept of a digital-only experience has been received with a positive response. The Game Awards, hosted last month as a digital-only experience, shattered viewership records from upwards of an 83% increase.

Making the best out of an uncertain year, 2020 was a colossal year for video games. March was one of the important months of the year as Animal Crossing: New Horizons brought people around the world together as the circumstances drifted everyone physically apart. Doom Eternal was released on the same day as ACNH, reaching critical acclaim in the same vein as the latter.

Hades was a ground-breaking indie hit that brought the love of rogue-like games to the masses. Alongside Hades, games like Fall Guys, Ori and the Will of the Wisps, and sleeper hit Umurangi Generation became successful over time. From a bevy of AAA titles and indie titles alike, there was truly something for anyone and everyone.
