Taking place in a fantasy-focused mid-1600s setting, Amazon Game Studios' New World is attempting to offer a new MMO experience complete with monsters, magic, and giant pirate ships. The game is currently slated to launch on August 31 of this year, however, if players want an early look at the game, Amazon has recently dropped an action-packed gameplay trailer.

Titled "This Is Aeternum," the promo focuses on showing off more of the game's world and the battles that will ensue within it, as the game's main characters square off against a variety of powerful enemies. These range from giant demonic beasts and skeletal warriors to undead pirates and large sabertooth cats.

Throughout the trailer, it's made clear that New World will offer players a range of areas to explore too, with the protagonists wandering through underground caverns, exploring expansive jungles, and venturing to crowded towns. It seems the game will generally offer a blend of different settings, as the game's pirate-era world meshes with the game's fantasy environments and enemies. One moment even shows the pair clash, as a large ship comes into contact with a malevolent evil force that sinks it and kills its occupants.

Other interesting aspects of the trailer show off some of the game's armor and weapons, revealing that players will be able to kit themselves out to fit their personal playstyle. The arsenal includes hammers, swords, bow and arrows, war-axes, and magical staffs, each of which appears to come in various different forms. The game is shaping up to be a very ambitious fantasy MMO, making it one to watch for fans of the genre in the lead up to August 31.

Although there are few details about the game's story, the basic premise of New World sees players shipwrecked on the mystical island of Aeternum. They'll be forced to carve a new life for themselves as an adventurer, fighting their way through New Worlds' expeditions, foraging for supplies, and battling against other players in a bid to survive. It sounds like Amazon's biggest game yet, filled with significant battles and tons of opportunity for player interaction.

For those who haven't been following the tumultuous rise of New World, the game has been delayed multiple times since its anticipated launch in May last year. Its postponement followed a series of setbacks for Amazon Game Studios, with the developer discontinuing squad shooter Crucible following its disappointing launch and, more recently, canceling its upcoming Lord of the Rings MMO.

New World is scheduled to be released on August 31 for PC.
