After some delays, Amazon recently began rolling out its long-promised server transfer system to New World players, only to immediately run into a bit of a snag. According to forum posts made by New World community managers, a small number of players have experienced an issue called Character_Persist_Failure that allowed them to duplicate enormous amounts of gold. Server transfers have been suspended again until the issue is sorted out.

The glitch involves players who experience the Character_Persist_Failure sending gold to a character unaffected by the glitch and then logging out. The gold is received and the sender logs back in to find the full amount of gold still in their inventory. This isn't the first time New World players have encountered a glitch, but it may be one of the most impactful.

Though New World players who were looking forward to server transfers may be disappointed by this news, Amazon appears to be taking the gold duplication issue very seriously. Of the approximately 150,000 characters that were transferred since the service went live, only a small percentage were affected by the glitch, but the effects seem to be already being felt throughout the game. Amazon claims to have corrected the issue and warns that players who exploited the bug may face a ban, with the money and items gained as a result being removed from the game. However, the issue lasted long enough that it may be difficult to say who should and shouldn't be punished.

Apparently, the glitch has had such an effect on New World's in-game economy that market prices for common items have skyrocketed, possibly as a result of players trying to launder their ill-gotten gains. Some players have also observed those who exploited the glitch using it to send incredible amounts of gold to their rivals in the hopes of taking their enemies down with them when Amazon begins banning offenders. It remains to be seen exactly how many players have been affected by the glitch, whether intentionally or unawares.

Amazon has announced that it is currently evaluating how to deal with the problem and how to prevent future occurrences of similar issues. Reportedly, the developers will bring back New World's server transfer function once the fixes are implemented and the offending players dealt with. Amazon will make an announcement before the server transfer function returns to ensure that players aren't taken by surprise when it comes back.

New World is available right now for PC.
